Obese maid of honour lost 11 stone after seeing 'horrific' photos from wedding
Sometimes we need a serious shock to make us change our lifestyle: Maybe you drink too much, and after one hangover too many you decide to sober up. Maybe you smoke too much, and when you've coughed a gob of tar into your handkerchief you decide to quit. Or maybe you've been overweight for most of your life, and then one picture makes you decide that enough is enough, and that it's time to slim down. For Helen Wood, who hails from Lancashire, England, that realisation came after she was chosen to be maid-of-honour at a friend's wedding, and when she saw the wedding pictures of herself, she was disturbed by how large she looked at 18 stone and seven pounds.
Helen says that she first started putting on weight after meeting her own husband Matt. Raising a family with the love or her life, she was content to neglect her physique; often snacking on crisps, before moving on to a lunch of cheese and ham sandwiches, wa chocolate bar, and later a double portion of pasta for dinner every day. At her lowest point, Helen was gorging on 5,000 calories a day and never exercised. But after her friend Kelly Dwyer asked her to be a bridesmaid, and saw the snaps of the event, everything changed.
Commenting on her experience, Helen stated: "It was horrendously embarrassing for me, watching my best friend get married and feeling like the fat bridesmaid. I stood out like a sore thumb in all the pictures, and when I actually saw the images taken I cried and cried ... I looked different to everyone else and really stood out. Another bridesmaid was pregnant at the time and I actually looked bigger than she did. The dress wasn’t the same as everyone else’s because of the alterations and I felt larger than I ever had. I made Matt delete all the photos he took of me."
Helen contacted the weight loss company Cambridge Weight Plan for help, and they offered her one-to-one support. With help from a consultant, Helen lost 12 pounds in two weeks by eating and drinking only the Cambridge Weight Plan products, and then began incorporating exercise into her daily routine. Now Helen eats porridge for breakfast, a weight-loss bar for lunch, and home-cooked meals for her dinner.
Helen adds: "I’ve got a split-picture on my phone background – one photo is of me now and one is me at my largest. When I showed my little boy, he didn’t know who the larger woman was. I said, ‘It’s Mummy,’ and bless him, he looked so confused. Even colleagues at work, who I haven’t seen for a while, walk past me or do a double-take.”
