If McDonald’s have proved anything over the years, it’s that you can add almost anything into a McFlurry and it will still be delicious. From stroopwafels to Reese’s Pieces, there aren’t many puddings that haven’t at some point been chopped, chilled and churned into the chain’s signature soft serve. However, while they’ve all been yummy in their own way, not every McFlurry is created equal. Some are a cut above the rest.

Unfortunately, the high rate of turnover means that many fan favourites disappear in the blink of an eye. One week you can be enjoying what feels like the most delicious dessert ever invented, before being left broken hearted and bereft when it’s removed from menus without warning. This makes being a McDonald’s fan something of an emotional rollercoaster. However, much to the relief of dedicated McFlurry enthusiasts everywhere, there are signs that just because something gets retired doesn’t mean it’s gone forever.

According to an official announcement from the fast food giants, McDonald’s are planning to bring back three of their most famous McFlurry flavours to restaurants across the UK. Posting on Twitter, the company created an online poll, stating that their “Core McFlurry line-up is changing on 26th June,” before asking fans to choose which of Maltesers, Smarties and Oreos they were “most excited about” tasting. The reaction has been extreme, to say the least.

Almost immediately after the announcement was made, social media was awash with commentary from excited fans discussing which of the rereleases was most welcome. Some were torn between two choices, with one writing, “The Smartie McFlurry was a symbol of my childhood before you took it away, but then again the malteser one has always been great [sic.],” while others were more certain in their outlook. One definitively wrote, "I FEEL VERY STRONGLY ABOUT THIS BRING BACK SMARTIES," which prompted a teasing response of “Oh, we are…” from the official McDonald’s account.

Though there are still four days left on the official poll, it already looks as though a clear fan favourite has emerged. After nearly 30,000 votes have been cast, it seems as though Maltesers are the runaway favourite with a 50% vote share. Smarties and Oreos are currently languishing in second and third place, with 26% and 24% respectively. For anyone with particularly strong feelings on the matter, there is still time to have your voice heard. However, regardless of the outcome of internet polling, it looks certain to be a McFlurry-heavy summer all over the UK.
