For hundreds of years now, Santa has been known as a lovable old man with a big white beard, who travels around the world giving out presents to children. But what if he were instead a lovable old woman with a big white beard, who travels around the world giving out presents to children? This idea was on the cards when a study questioned people how they would rebrand Father Christmas in order to give him a more modern look.

Logo design company GraphicSpring asked approximately 400 people from the United States and United Kingdom for their views on the matter. Afterwards, 4,000 people voted on the most popular version, with the ideal 'Modern Santa' apparently having a shorter beard, skinny jeans, sneakers and a hoverboard instead of a sleigh.

However, the real controversy came when the same group of people were asked: "If you could ‘rebrand’ Santa for modern society, what gender would he be?" The survey found that 11 per cent of respondents thought Santa should be female, with 17 per cent saying he should be gender neutral. The news that 27 per cent of the small pool of people asked believed this soon created outrage online, with hundreds taking to social media to blast the idea. A female or gender neutral Santa, they asked? Outrageous!

So, where do you stand on the matter? Would you rebrand Santa to be female or gender neutral? Or are you firmly on the side of most people online?
