'Tinder Gold' is being released soon and has a host of new features for singles

It used to be said that the best things in life are free - but that was before people discovered that you can create a 'premium' version of something and stick a price tag on it.

Tinder, which was one of the first apps to offer a 'swiping' function, was an instant hit when it first launched in 2012. As a free dating platform, it had obvious appeal to young people who were looking for a partner - or something a little more casual.

Within just two years of its existence, the app was registering approximately one billion swipes a day, and since then the company has introduced a load of new features. With the addition of more gender options, a 'moments' function, and the ability to 'super like' another user, Tinder began shaping up to be one of the more sophisticated options on the market.

Unsurprisingly, then, the app got an upgrade to a premium version in 2015 with the launch of Tinder Plus. The standard functions were still available for free, but paying users could also get access to 'rewind' and 'passport' features in order to re-swipe previous potential matches and change their location in order to look for new people.

Now, the masterminds behind the most iconic dating app of the 21st century have gone one step further. In an announcement on their website, Tinder broke the news of yet another upgrade. The latest version, which is being described as 'a first-class swipe experience', is apparently being marketed as a more luxury iteration of the dating app:

"We know you. You live in a world where every moment counts—where speed equals success, you’re always on the go, and you can’t let anything slow you down. Especially your Tinder feed.

"That’s why we created Tinder Gold, a members-only service, offering our most exclusive features: Passport, Rewind, Unlimited Likes, five Super Likes per day, one Boost per month, and more profile controls—as well as our new Likes You feature, so that you can see who likes you before you swipe. Think of it as your personal Swipe Right concierge—available 24/7—bringing all of your pending matches to you. Now you can sit back, enjoy a fine cocktail, and browse through profiles at your leisure."

The statement sounds almost like it's trying too hard to be one of those Old Spice commercials, but the details it gives about the new offerings are certainly intriguing. The 'likes you' feature is probably the most useful for those who take their Tinder-ing seriously, as it allows you to see who's already swiped right on your profile. However, the function could also potentially kill off the app. Essentially, if everybody just waits to see who's swiped them, instead of doing the swiping, nobody will get any matches.

I don't think that's a huge worry, though, as prices for the Gold package are rumoured to be around $15 a month. Maybe a few of the more serious users will invest - but I doubt it'll be a huge hit for those who are mainly in it for the Netflix and chill.
