11 of the most dangerous fetishes people actually have

Everybody has different preferences when it comes to what they like in the bedroom. Some folks are straight-up vanilla, nothing-but-missionary kinda people, whereas others get up to the sorts of things that you'll only come across in the sketchiest parts of the internet. And both those things are fine. Well, most of the time they are.

Sometimes, however, people develop fetishes that aren't just a little odd, they're also dangerous. Often these fetishes are so extreme that individuals will risk serious injury or even death in order to pursue their kink. And here's just 11 of them...

1. Choking

Of all the fetishes on this list, choking is perhaps the most normal - but it's also incredibly dangerous. During the heat of passion, it's easy to push down too hard on somebody's windpipe or break their neck, and there have been instances before when belts or other choking devices became stuck around a person's throat. In fact, some sources claim that as many as 1,000 people die every year from some form of choking or autoerotic asphyxiation.

2. Doing it in public

People getting aroused by the idea of being caught isn't totally unheard of, and some folks with this particular kink end up doing the deed in public places in order to increase the risk. This is pretty dangerous because a) it's illegal, and b) depending on where exactly you do it, you can come into contact with a ton of bacteria that you really don't want getting all up in your genitals.

3. Cannibalism

Otherwise known as vorarephilia, this fetish is incredibly rare - but also incredibly dangerous. In 2003, a German man named Armin Meiwes was given a lengthy prison sentence after it transpired that he had killed and eaten another man who had consented to the whole process. Meiwes said he had fantasized about eating someone since he was just eight years old.

4. Fire

Having a few candles in the bedroom to get you in the mood is all very well and good, but actually setting things (or yourself) on fire in order to get your freak on is just slightly extreme. Pyrophiliacs put themselves at risk in order to get off and can end up with lifelong damage if they're not careful when playing with fire.

5. Getting down on the road

Even without any distractions, driving a car can be dangerous at the best of times. Add to the mix a desire to do the deed and a lack of inhibitions and - hey presto - you've got yourself a very dangerous situation. As many as one in six people have admitted to engaging in the activity, however, so it's not as uncommon as you might think.

6. Vampirism

As it turns out, vampires aren't just the stuff of myth and legend; some people actually practice bloodsucking in real life. Not all self-proclaimed vampires partake in the practice as part of a sexual habit, but many do - and they need to be careful when drawing blood. If using a sharp blade, it's easy to cut too deep, or hit a vein/artery, and that can very quickly turn a night of pleasure into a night at A&E.

7. Accidents

People who have Symphorophilia are aroused by tragedies and accidents, and will often seek out videos or real-life examples of car crashes, natural disasters, or fires in order to get off. Some people have it so bad, though, that they will put themselves at risk of an accident or purposely cause one in order to get their kicks.

8. Beastiality

Almost everyone will have heard of this one and, as unthinkable as it may be, it's true that some people do engage in sexual activity with non-human animals. As well as being wholly unethical, this practice is also super dangerous - especially when larger animals are involved.

9. Necrophilia

If you weren't already aware, necrophilia is the technical term for arousal caused by dead people. Again, it is obviously illegal to engage in any kind of sexual activity with a dead body, but people still do - and they can seriously suffer because of it.

10. Falling downstairs

As bizarre as it sounds, this is a legitimate fetish and is known as Climacophilia. Not too much is known about it, but people who have it are turned on by the sight of someone falling downstairs, or via the action of taking a tumble themselves. Pretty much everyone reading this has probably slipped down the stairs once or twice - so we all know how dangerous it can be.

11. Murder

Anyone who is driven to kill another human being is almost certainly pretty messed up, but those who have Erotophonophilia will claim that they were only acting on their fetish. The kink compels people to watch other people getting killed or to do the killing themselves.

So, next time you hook up with someone new, maybe make sure they're not a Symphorophiliac. Otherwise, you could find yourself in some very dangerous situations.
