Everybody wants their wedding to go perfectly, but for the guests, where's the fun in that? Sometimes the worst experiences make for the best stories! On social media, several brave souls have shared hilarious tales of waiters dropping cakes, caterers screwing up the food, and drunken guests making a very unpleasant scene.
However, Ohio-based novelist Amy Pennza may have the most captivating chronicle of them all. When Jimmy Fallon asked his 51 million Twitter followers to share their #WeddingFail, her response gained a massive amount of attention. "My mother-in-law wore a wedding dress to my wedding," she wrote. "So, yeah, top that one, Twitter."
As proof, Pennza included a photo of herself and the groom's mother both dressed in white floor-length white gowns. In the image, the two are locked in an epic staredown, which drove Twitter users crazy with curiosity. "i need the story. what was her justification?" asked one person, while another joked, "Is she still alive?"
"So, a couple people have asked for the story behind The Dress," Pennza tweeted. "I don't remember much about the day. Most people say their wedding is a blur, and that's true for me, too. But I know I said this: "You... You could be the bride...'"
Pennza said her sister, the maid of the honor, and her college roommate, a bridesmaid, both spotted the mother-in-law's fashion faux paus. They didn't say anything to the bride, though, hoping she was too distracted to notice.
"But secretly, they both spent the reception looking at me, then each other, then [the mother-in-law], then me, then the cop the venue made us hire - hoping I didn't go for his taser," Pennza joked. "I'm happy to report the wedding unfolded without bloodshed, or anyone being shoved into the champagne fountain."
She went on to explain that her mother-in-law "grew up in extreme poverty," which led her to become "extremely frugal." As a notorious "bargain hunter" she spotted the white dress at an "incredible" price and "couldn't turn it down."
This is a bizarre story, but not quite as odd as this single woman who's already bought her wedding dress and planned her big day:"If you ask her now, she says she feels terrible about it," Pennza revealed. "Although, she also told me, "I think I've still got it. We should raffle it off."
"So, yeah, the wedding dress was a shock. But it gave me a pretty funny memory," the novelist concluded. "Sure, she wore a wedding dress to my wedding. But she has more than made up for it since. When I told her about this getting a lot of attention, and said I worried it might hurt her feelings, she waved it off. "Whatever makes me famous."
Fortunately, the story had a happy ending. The bride still gets along with her mother-in-law and is still married to the groom, with four kids. If the mother-in-law wore traditional formal attire to the wedding, Pennza would have never had a viral story. So, if you want to make a friend's big day memorable, you know what to do: show up in a wedding dress!
