Guy finally meets the 86-year-old woman he's being playing an online game with for a year
Social media can often be a dark and horrible place. The likes of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram are packed full of "trolls" who are ready to dish out abuse at any given moment to any given user. However, for all the bad that social media has done, it does occasionally offer a glimmer of hope and provides us with a heartwarming story which reminds us that the world isn't that bad after all.
This is one of those heartwarming stories.
A young man and an elderly woman who met online playing Words With Friends together have finally met up in person after 324 games spanning across a whole year.
Unsurprisingly, the story has gone viral on Twitter and has left plenty of people reaching for the tissues as they try to hold back the tears.
The story was shared online by Spencer, a 22-year-old from Harlem, who wrote:
so last summer i randomly met this 80 y/o woman on words with friends. we played 300+ games together and she actually ended up becoming a good friend of mine. today i got to go to florida and meet her in person?
Despite the fact that there is a 64-year age gap between the two of them and that they also didn't know each other in the slightest, Spencer and Roz began jousting on the online Scrabble-like game and they both refused to ever turn down the offer of a re-match.
After months of jousting, the 22-year-old from Harlem, New York and the 86-year-old, who resides in a retirement community in Florida, became firm friends.
In an emotional series of photos that were shared on Twitter, Spencer can be seen sharing a very cute embrace with Roz after he had flown down to Florida.
His tweet has now been retweeted over 209,000 times and has received over 900,000 likes on the social media platform as well. However, Spencer did reveal that he hasn't exactly been taking it easy on the pensioner, with him showing that he has won 201 games compared to 114 for Roz.
Their unbelievably cute story pulled at the heartstrings of plenty of Twitter users, with plenty of people gushing at the images.
Some even shared that they had similar experiences through the Words With Friends app, with one user sharing this particular emotional story.
I made a beautiful friend on WWF many years ago. I am American, she was from UK. We vacationed together here and in Perú. Then cancer took her a little over a year ago. So grateful for her presence, however short, in my life—and grateful you got to meet your WW Friend! God Bless!
Their meeting was made possible by New York pastor Amy Butler, who added:
Sweet day today with Spencer and his #wordswithfriends friend, Roz, watching them bond in person for the first time.
What an unbelievably cute story. While social media can be awful for piling pressure on people in terms of how they should look or behave, it can provide us with absolutely wonderful stories such as this one. Now, where are the tissues!?
