Though society and culture are complex and ever-changing things, there are a few rituals and traditions that have remained more or less the same over the decades and centuries. Birthdays, for example, are almost always celebrated with cake and gifts, and graduating from college or university is universally seen as a cause for celebration.

But if there's one thing that's held in higher regard more than any other age-old celebration, it's marriage - or, more specifically, a person's wedding day.

Everyone knows that the bride is supposed to wear white, and that the groom is supposed to wait at the alter, and that everyone is supposed to have a good time (or at least pretend to) while watching the pair cut the cake and take their first dance and coo over all the friends and relatives they've invited.

So, when someone throws a spanner into the works, it's sort of a big deal.

In an account that was originally sent to Slate’s 'Dear Prudence', one Twitter user shared the story of a woman whose big day was ruined when the best man decided to propose to his girlfriend during the ceremony.

And yes, it's exactly as cringeworthy as it sounds.

"My husband and I started dating, got pregnant, had a child, moved in together, bought a house, and got a dog in that order," the anonymous woman starts by saying. "Our friends and family have asked us for years why we weren’t married yet. We always pushed it off to build better lives. We’ve done really well for ourselves and finally reached a point where we could afford a huge blowout wedding to celebrate our lives with everyone we know and love."

Right from the beginning, then, it's clear that this wedding is something that the woman has waited years for, and that she's really gone all out for the celebration.

The writer then goes on to say that her husband picked his best friend - named only as "John" - to be the best man. However, that very soon turned out to be a big mistake.

Before the woman had even said "I do", John decided to steal the show.

"John stopped midceremony to propose to his longtime girlfriend, "Jane," and reveal her pregnancy," she wrote. "I couldn’t even hear the vows my husband wrote or the rest of the ceremony over the noise of Jane’s happy sobs, her very surprised family who were also guests, and people seated nearby congratulating her."

The bride then went on to say that just that one tiny moment was enough to derail her entire day. The videographer kept cutting to John and Jane when he should have been filming the bride and groom, the other guests got caught up in the newly-betrothed's story, and John committed the ultimate crime of making his best man's speech about himself.

"I’ve never been an attention hog, and I wouldn’t even have minded if he’d proposed after the ceremony, but weeks later I am still seething," the bride wrote.

"I am so shocked and angry that I keep asking myself if this is real life. My husband hasn’t spoken to John since the wedding, and our mutual friends think what he did was rude but that my husband should just get over it. My husband has joked that he’ll resume his friendship when John and Jane give him a $40,000 check for 'their half of the wedding.'"

She rounds off her story with the question: "Do you think John’s behavior warrants the end of a long-term friendship, or are we angry over nothing?"

And, of course, Twitter made their thoughts known.

Needless to say, everyone is on the bride's side. And, honestly, I'm with most of these revenge-hungry tweeters. If John thinks it's totally cool to ruin someone's wedding in such a selfish way, he should expect his own big day to be suitably ruined in return. In fact, just give me the date and the venue and I'll happily turn up and stage a flash mob of mass-proposals.

Now, who's coming with me?
