Has the public ever fallen in love with a member of the royal family as quickly as Meghan Markle? It's hard to say. Prince Harry and William's mother Diana Spencer once set the benchmark for popularity, and even later William's spouse Kate Middleton managed to win us all over with her bright smile and charming personality. But here's the thing: Meghan was already well known to fans of the television series Suits, and even then she was considered glamorous and beautiful enough to feel like a real-life Disney princess of some kind.

But it's not just her good looks that have given her such mass appeal: her imitable sense of style and haute couture has also helped to give her a leg up. Yes, ever since she first arrived on the scene, and became a bona fide member of the aristocracy, Meghan Markle's fabulous outfits have been much admired by the public and the paparazzi alike. However, bearing this in mind, there's one other factor you might have forgotten about which might put a damper on Markle fashion appreciation: namely, the enormous cost of all those wonderful shoes, gowns, hats and dresses. Seriously, clothes like that can't come cheap.

According to a recent investigation conducted by The Daily Mail, Meghan Markle has already spent an eye-watering £155,575 ($1529782.54) on 15 stunning designer outfits from labels such as Dior, Givenchy, Prada, and Chanel. She's needed these elegant clothes to wear at a number of important events, including a day out at the Royal Ascot, a meeting with Queen Elizabeth, and a recent trip to Dublin with Harry.

For comparison's sake, Prince William's wife Kate Middleton spent approximately £119,000 on clothes during 2017: which is apparently fairly conservative for someone regularly attending so many glitzy functions. Indeed, it's estimated that if Meghan's exorbitant spending continues at its current rate, she could end up spend around £1 million by the end of 2018.

The Mail reports that Meghan spent £21,000 ($27,733) on her outfit for Prince Charles's 70th birthday celebrations, £60,000 ($79,239) on her outfit when she attended her nephew Prince Louis' christening, and £10,000 ($13,206) on her outfit for a solo outing with Queen Elizabeth in Chester last month.

But the million dollar question (literally) is this: where is all that money coming from? Well, apparently Meghan's wardrobe bill is all handled by Prince Charles’s estate. However, before her and Harry were officially wed, Meghan had to cover the cost of her own wardrobe on her own. For instance, the Ralph & Russo gown that she wore for her engagement pictures was apparently worth approximately £56,000 ($73,957), and every penny of it apparently came straight out of Meghan's personal account. Ouch! I wouldn't want to look at my bank statement after that hefty purchase.

However, before you go criticising Meghan's spending, just remember how important the many events she attends are from a diplomatic standpoint, and then think about the fact that she has to look her absolute best for every one. Although it's nice to fantasise about having a wardrobe that expensive, I bet that she probably just wants to get into some grotty old comfy PJs at the end of a long day, just like the rest of us.
