Luis Rubiales is facing prosecutors wanting him behind bars for more than two years for kissing a player without consent following the World Cup final.

Spain's victory over England in the Women's World Cup final was marred by the incident, which saw the former President of the Spanish FA kissing Jenni Hermoso during the trophy presentation.

Despite Rubiales insisting the kiss was consensual, mounting outrage led to widespread calls for his resignation from both footballing circles and governmental quarters.

An angle from the incident suggests Rubiales initiated the embrace, throwing himself into the air and forcing Hermoso to hold him to prevent a fall before the kiss occurred, per the Daily Mail.

In response, Hermoso addressed the moment during an interview with Spanish TV network La 1, expressing her discomfort: "Eh... yeah, I did not enjoy that."

Rubiales, unfazed by the criticism, dismissed the controversy during an interview with Radio MARCO, stating: "The kiss with Jenni? There are idiots everywhere. When two people have a minor show of affection, we can't listen to idiocy. We are champions and that's what I'll take."

Now, prosecutors revealed on Wednesday their demand for Rubiales to pay Jenni Hermoso €100,000 ($108,000) in compensation should he be convicted at trial.

As reported by the Daily Mail, in a six-page indictment made public, the prosecutors outlined their pre-trial demands, seeking a one-year jail term for a sexual assault charge and an additional one year and six months in prison for coercion related to Rubiales' alleged efforts to coerce Jenni into defending him over the "unwanted" kiss.

Madrid-based judge Francisco de Jorge, who recommended Rubiales face trial earlier this year, paved the way for legal proceedings after uncovering what he termed "solid evidence" suggesting potential illegality in the kiss incident.

In a ruling made public in January, the judge stated: "The investigation has revealed the existence of solid evidence [that] the kiss Luis Manuel Rubiales Bejar gave the player Jennifer Hermoso was not consensual and was a unilateral and surprise initiative on his part."

He further detailed Hermoso's bewildered and surprised reaction to the unexpected kiss, highlighting her lack of time to react as Rubiales grabbed her by the head and kissed her during the awards ceremony witnessed by millions of TV viewers last August.

The judge implicated former Spain's World Cup women's team manager Jorge Vilda, men's team director Albert Luque, and former Spanish FA marketing director Ruben Rivera, proposing that they, too, should face trial for their alleged involvement in pressuring Hermoso to support Rubiales publicly.

The prosecutors, on Tuesday, declared they were seeking prison sentences of one year and six months for Vilda, Luque, and Rivera if convicted of coercion.

Hermoso, now playing for Mexican side Tigres, initiated the Audiencia Nacional investigation by filing a complaint against Rubiales in September.

She accused him of kissing her without consent after the Women's World Cup final, labeling it as a sexist act that left her feeling vulnerable.

Rubiales announced his resignation as Spanish FA president in September last year amidst the "kissgate" scandal, vowing to defend his innocence.

His mother, Angeles Bejar, launched a hunger strike in their hometown of Motril near Granada, urging Hermoso to "tell the truth" about the incident.
