Amid the hype over Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's marriage, we tend to forget that the 33-year-old royal had a life before he was swept off his feet by his American actress wife. A big part of that past life was Chelsy Davy, who he dated on and off for seven years before parting ways with for good back in 2011.

After they broke up, there was much speculation over why exactly the young couple had split. Some believed that long-distance had taken its toll, others insisted that the relationship had simply "run its course", while there were also rumours of Chelsy being unable to take being hounded by the British media any longer and also remaining doubtful about the idea of marrying into the royal family and giving up her independence.

Although we're likely to never know the full details of the break-up, recently fans of the royals were given a snippet of information that sheds some light on the real reason Harry and the now-32-year-old businesswoman ended things - and weirdly enough, apparently Harry's brother Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton played a part in it.

According to journalist Angela Levin, it was when Chelsy attended William and Kate's wedding in April 2011 as Harry's plus one that she realised she could never be with him.

At the time of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding, the pair were no longer an item, but Chelsy attended as the prince's plus one nonetheless, allegedly in an attempt to rekindle their relationship.

However, Levin's royal biography, Harry: Conversations with the Prince claims that it was the scale of the first royal wedding and the worrying amount of media attention Kate was receiving that helped the Zimbabwe-born former lawyer to make her decision once and for all.

"A friend revealed that seeing the enormity and pomp of the day convinced Chelsy that she and Harry had been right to separate," The Mirror reveals Levin wrote. "Although they had a lot in common, she saw clearly that because they came from such different worlds it could never have worked, especially as she valued her privacy and guarded it so carefully."

If this is true, it's hardly surprising, given the fact the 32-year-old gave an interview with The Times a few years ago in which she spoke of the "scary" attention she received while dating Harry.

"It was so full-on. Crazy and scary and uncomfortable," she told the newspaper. "I found it very difficult when I was bad. I couldn’t cope. I was young, I was trying to be a normal kid and it was horrible."

Despite the break-up, Chelsy and Harry have remained friends, with the jewellery brand owner even attending his wedding to Meghan in May. Harry's ex-girlfriend was immediately made into a #ItShouldHaveBeenMe meme by people online; however, all memes aside, it is clear that both parties have moved on, with Harry head-over-heels in love with Meghan, and Chelsy happily dating TV producer James Marshall.

It's good to hear that exes can be friends after all. Who'd have thought?
