Since getting together with Prince Harry, Meghan Markle has been unable to get her name out of the news, with one explosive story after another coming out and everyone watching and criticising her every move. Nonetheless, the Duchess of Sussex has coped admirably, with her dignity and poise intact at every turn. However, in a dramatic new interview, her father has revealed his fears about her new life, claiming that his daughter is "terrified" and "under too much pressure".

Speaking to The Sun on Sunday, Thomas Markle has stated that the former Suits star is masking the pressure of her new royal life with a "pained smile" and that he is concerned about her welfare.

The 73-year-old reportedly said: "My thing about my daughter right now is that I think she is terrified. I see it in her eyes, I see it in her face and I see it in her smile. I’ve seen her smile for years. I know her smile. I don’t like the one I’m seeing now."

He continued: "This one isn’t even a stage smile – this is a pained smile. That might be just having a couple of bad days. I don’t know. It really worries me. I think she’s under too much pressure. There’s a high price to pay to be married to that family."

In addition, Thomas - who was unable to make it to the royal wedding in May due to sickness - has said that he disapproves of the rules of protocol his daughter and her new family are expected to follow, claiming that they are "outdated".

Speaking of the family's strict dress code, as well as the rigid lack of emotion, he said: "Meghan seems like something out of an old movie. Why in 2018 are we dressing like the 1930s? Why do they have to cover their knees? I think Meghan is in deeper than I am. I’m not blaming Harry or anyone but they are following rules that don’t make sense to me. They are no less human than anybody else. God knows, I feel sorry for them, for not being able to show emotion."

The American retired television lighting director told The Sun he had been shunned by the Windsors ever since he made a profit from staged photos back in May. Stating that he had apologised to the Queen, he questioned why he was still being given the cold shoulder, saying: "I honestly think that if the Queen took the time to think that she would not see me because I did some stupid photographs, that is ridiculous," and adding "half of Great Britain seems to make a fortune selling pictures of my daughter and her husband. Are they shunned?"

In the interview with The Sun on Sunday, Thomas also spoke out about his health problems, warning his daughter that he could die soon. "I had a heart attack, doesn’t anybody care?" he said. "I could actually die soon. Does she want this to be the last thing we’ve said to each other? It is probably the longest time I have gone without speaking to her ever. I just want to clear the air and tell her how proud I am of her."

Here's hoping the Markle family can fix things soon, and that Meghan is coping with her new life better than her father thinks.
