President Donald Trump has claimed that the 'Spygate' conspiracy, which alleges that FBI moles worked secretly against him during his presidential campaign, could be a political scandal of historic proportions.

In a tweet on Wednesday, the 45th POTUS wrote: "SPYGATE could be one of the biggest political scandals in history!", with the post coming after a number of previous tweets that stated a ‘Criminal Deep State’ infiltrated his 2016 presidential campaign to try and ensure Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton won.

The former reality TV star's conspiracy theory surfaced when reports from the New York Times and Washington Post - two newspapers he regularly discredits - indicated that the FBI used an "informant" while investigating the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia prior to the 2016 election.

Soon after this, the president used this news to accuse the FBI of planting a spy within his campaign and demanded that the DoJ investigate the matter, seemingly without any evidence.

"If they had spies in my campaign, that would be a disgrace to this country, that would be one of the biggest insults that anyone’s ever seen … It would make probably every political event ever look like small potatoes", Trump stated on Tuesday in the Oval Office.

As a result of the accusations, the White House has announced that a meeting will be held on Thursday between top government officials and two senior Republican lawmakers - but no Democrats - in which attendees will "review highly classified and other information they have requested."

The president has attempted to add fuel to the fire with his tweets over the past few days. Yesterday, he wrote: "If the person placed very early into my campaign wasn’t a SPY put there by the previous Administration for political purposes, how come such a seemingly massive amount of money was paid for services rendered – many times higher than normal…"

Continuing on his dramatic rant, he said: "…Follow the money! The spy was there early in the campaign and yet never reported Collusion with Russia, because there was no Collusion. He was only there to spy for political reasons and to help Crooked Hillary win – just like they did to Bernie Sanders, who got duped!"

In a later tweet, he continued further, posting: "Look how things have turned around on the Criminal Deep State. They go after Phony Collusion with Russia, a made up Scam, and end up getting caught in a major SPY scandal the likes of which this country may never have seen before! What goes around, comes around!"
