Drake’s best friend shot dead in harrowing CCTV footage

Gun crime continues to be one of the most prevalent and damaging issues permeating our society to this day.

Mass shootings - defined as a single incident in which four of more people are killed or injured - are a significant problem; the BBC reported last year that 374 such incidents occurred in America in 2015.

Moreover, the total number of causalities as a result of firearm use in the United States stood at a considerable 13,286 people in 2015, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The total number of fatalities this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive stands at 11,086, while 22,287 have sustained injuries.

Clearly, more needs to be done to curb what is an enduring and devastating nationwide issue, though there doesn't appear to be any sort of accordance on what path to take.

Last week, though, it was an incident of gun crime in Toronto, Canada, that garnered attention, after a long time friend and member of Drake's entourage, Anthony 'Fif' Soares was shot dead in the lobby of a building, at around 3am last Thursday morning.

The footage is disturbing, but can be found on YouTube.

Soares is believed to have collapsed almost straight away, but the two individuals continued to fire at him. He was rushed to hospital but later declared dead.

Toronto Police Homicide Unit Detective Sergeant Gary Giroux said;

"In essence, the deceased was trapped between the inner foyer area and the offenders who were on the opposite side of the glass.

"Drake was a friend of his, I certainly would encourage him through his tweets to encourage anybody within the community to come forward with regards to any information that they have that may assist in solving his friend’s murder.

"Certainly, it was very targeted. It was very focused. Certainly, it was overkill."

Describing the incident, Giroux continued;

"Both of the suspects are armed with semi-automatic pistols.

 “The video shows that both of the weapons lock in the open position which indicates the weapons are now empty.”

Drke, meanwhile, posted a tribute to his late friend on Instagram, writing;

"RIP to one of our family members...our brother... I still can't even believe this morning was real. It was a honor to have shared years together and I will always keep your memory alive".

Detective Sergeant Giroux is appealing for anyone with information to step forward;

"Both of the suspects are armed with semi-automatic pistols.

"The video shows that both of the weapons lock in the open position which indicates the weapons are now empty.”

The motivation behind the attack is not yet known.
