Mencius Moldbug is the racist anti-democratic blogger who inspired the alt-right
The alt-right is merely the surface ripple of a far more terrifying movement. Described as 'cyber goth' and 'rabid nihilism', the Pepe the frog Trump lovers and white nationalists of the 21st century rest upon a far darker anti-democratic countercurrent, popularized in the last twenty years, known as 'The Dark Enlightenment'.
Sounds too insane to be true, right?
Well, enter Curtis Yarvin, a 2000s blogger who went by the pen name Mencius Moldbug, a computer scientist and racist writer who coined the idea that the world will undergo what he calls 'The Dark Enlightenment', as a direct consequence of the failures of democracy and equality. Behold, the self-declared superior race.
Here's a sample quote of his: “115 IQ people are not generally well equipped to summarize 160 IQ people”.
In essence, Moldbug believes that IQ, and genetic intelligence, is the ultimate measurement of success in a person, and that different races have different IQs on average, and thus equality is impossible, and democracy is a joke, because whites are superior to black people.
As a consequence of this madness, he rejects American democracy, and most of all despises the idea that "all men are created equal", something he finds scientifically absurd.
Of course, all civilizations are founded upon faith. The intrinsic value of every individual, the protections afforded even to the worst criminals, the beauty of individual rights, is an article of faith. There is no proof that every person, or any person for that matter, is entitled to equal treatment. That is what a worthy liberal civilization is for - to perpetuate faith in humanity over a monarch or the war of all against all.
Yet, Moldbug has held the attention of some people very close to President Trump, including former chief strategist Steve Bannon, and Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel, who is funding Moldburg's mysterious new business venture, Urbit.
Moldbug's philosophy was added upon by philosopher Nick Land, a major figure who eventually wrote and legitimized The Dark Enlightenment, a fascinating but horrifying text about how humankind should be ruled by a monarch and that equality between races is impossible.
He also predicted the modern alt-right in its cynical incarnations online:
"When a sane, pragmatic, and fact-based negotiation of human differences is forbidden by ideological fiat, the alternative is not a reign of perpetual peace, but a festering of increasingly self-conscious and militantly defiant thoughtcrime, nourished by publicly unavowable realities, and energized by powerful, atavistic, and palpably dissident mythologies. That’s obvious, on the ‘Net."
In other words, the modern offensive and racist alt-right trolls have been an outgrowth of the online rejection of left-wing media narrative. Think about the recent Google memo controversy, or the wage gap, as examples. Democracy and equality, to The Dark Enlightenment, are sacred cows awaiting slaughter. Democracy is best summed up as what neo-reactionary thinkers call 'the Cathedral'.
What is the Cathedral?
It is the sum ideal of equality, individual liberty, democracy and peace. Essentially, the media class, the government and the academy are all complicit in the big lie that democracy will survive the 21st century, and thus create a 'Cathedral' of faith that opposes any evidence that contradicts their beliefs.
Mencius Moldbug and his adherents argue that racial conflict will not, and cannot, be remedied - and the only possible response is either a great fracturing or an authoritarian ruler. After all, the founding fathers were all slave owners. American democracy was born in original sin.
Moldbug's ideas present a chilling world where biology is destiny, inequality can not be overcome, and the weak and the defenseless use the government to steal from the capable. He advocates for a CEO to run the entire country for the profit of shareholders, tossing democratic choice and individual liberty out the window.
He idealizes China, Hong Kong and Singapore as examples of what a better totalitarian future would look like. The scariest thing is, in the era of America's collapse on the global stage, we may in fact be headed for a Dark Enlightenment.
Silicon Valley tech barons could become much stronger than any congress. In many ways, they already are. They would, with advanced cybernetic technology, make themselves into superhumans and destroy the rest of humankind, unable to compete with robotic warlords who have edited their genes to surpass any normal human being.
It all sounds like insane science fiction. But then again, so did President Trump... until it happened. Fight hard for the dignity of the human spirit. The future digital reality may not treat it kindly.
