On Thursday afternoon it was discovered that Vanessa Trump had filed for divorce from her husband, Donald Trump Jr. Their marital problems were rumored earlier in the week, after the New York tabloid Page Six explained that they had seen some conflict due to both Trump Jr.'s travels and his controversial tweets.

Their anonymous sources claimed that they "have been living separate lives" due to his behavior, and he "has appeared to have changed recently". The controversial tweets mentioned may refer to his provocative comments on the Russian collusion scandal, or how he recently liked a tweet promoting a conspiracy theory about one of the teenage survivors of the Parkland school shooting.

The rumors were eventually confirmed yesterday afternoon, after the couple released a joint statement on the matter. Speaking to Page Six, they said:

“After 12 years of marriage, we have decided to go our separate ways. We will always have tremendous respect for each other and our families. We have five beautiful children together and they remain our top priority. We ask for your privacy during this time.”

As you can imagine, the internet respected their wishes and treated the divorce without resorting to mocking humor. Well, for about two minutes, at least. Then it was open season on the couple, with many latching onto some wedding photos from over a decade ago.

If Twitter could get this much mileage over one wedding photo, you can bet they would have a field day if something actually bizarre surfaced. Right on time, an old story from The New York Times has emerged with some very odd details about how Vanessa first met Donald Jr.

One Twitter user tweeted, "this is how don, jr. and vanessa trump met," screenshotting a ridiculous quote from the interview. While your first thought might be 'this can't possibly be real', the tweet also links to The New York Times interview with Vanessa from back in 2006, long before she was in any way related to the U.S. presidency.

The meeting itself is awkward and peculiar in a lot of ways, but isn't it kind of incredible that there's an official quote out there of Vanessa Trump referring to Trump as "retarded"? Here's the amazing story:
