A petition has been launched by Barack Obama fans to rename the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets in New York after the former president. Coincidentally, this is the same street that the current president's famous building, Trump Tower, sits on.

"We request the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets be renamed ‘President Barack H. Obama Avenue,’" the petition reads. "Any addresses on that stretch of Fifth Avenue [which includes Trump Tower] should be changed accordingly."

A member of the New York Police Department (NYPD) stated that the police will now keep an around the clock presence at the location due to the number of protests and threats against Donald Trump. At the time of writing, more than 15,000 people have signed the petition. A statement on the page explains the reasoning behind the request for a name change:

"The City of Los Angeles recently honored former President Barack Obama by renaming a stretch of the 134 Freeway near Downtown LA in his honor.

"We request the New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president who saved our nation from the Great Recession, achieved too many other accomplishments to list, and whose two terms in office were completely scandal free."

Clearly, that last part is a deliberate burn on Trump, whose first two years in office have been pretty scandal-laden, to say the least.

Of course, it is no secret that Donald Trump is not a fan of his predecessor. Even before he was a presidential candidate himself, he did his best to discredit the Democrat leader by promoting the 'birther' falsehood, and has only gone on to spur more hatred towards Obama since assuming office.

Just recently, he tried to call out the former president by implying that it was hypocritical for him to have a wall around his private property. "President and Mrs. Obama built/has a ten foot Wall around their D.C. mansion/compound," he wrote on Twitter. "I agree, totally necessary for their safety and security. The U.S. needs the same thing, slightly larger version!"

And this came shortly after he accused Obama of knowing about Russian interference in the election (something which Trump usually denies ever happed): "So President Obama knew about Russia before the Election. Why didn’t he do something about it? Why didn’t he tell our campaign? Because it is all a big hoax, that’s why, and he thought Crooked Hillary was going to win!!!"

To have the address of his iconic tower as "Barack H Obama Avenue", then, would truly be an insult.

In order for the street name change to be approved, the City Council has to approve the measure, and the Mayor, Bill de Blasio (a Democrat), would have to give final permission.

Name changes happen quite frequently, so it is not unlikely that "Barack H Obama Avenue" will come to be eventually. Indeed, just in the last month, the council approved name changes that saw streets being named after the Wu-Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G., folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie, and poet Audre Lorde.

If it does go ahead, though, there's no doubt that Trump will be calling for his own avenue almost immediately after.
