Making the decision to run a marathon is not one that anyone should take lightly - because, without adequate preparation, 26.2 miles can easily break you.

The marathon, held in Bordeaux, France, leads participating runners through a number of vineyards, estates and castles.

And to keep hydrated, participants can stop off at the various water stations if they so wish - a pretty standard feature of any marathon.

But when you're already putting your body through absolute hell, for want of a better term, why limit yourself to plain old water when you can have something a little more, erm, satisfying?

Yep, when partaking in the Marathon du Medoc, there will be certain stalls you can stop off at to take advantage of their wine tasting sessions and cheese sampling.

But if neither of these delicacies tickle your fancy, you can always try some local grapes, ice creams, and oysters.

Oh, and to top it off, the marathon is also fancy dress-themed, and the person with the best costume ends up winning a prize!

Plus the marathon is held in the south-west of France, with plenty of stunning views and historic sites for you to feast your eyes on while you sweat it out.

Participants are given six and a half hours to complete the course which, according to the organisers, gives them plenty of time to get in a few glasses of wine, and perhaps some delicious food samples.
