The other night while self-isolating alone in a house, a big spider made itself comfortable on my carpet. To put its size into context, at first, I wasn't sure if my hamster had broken out of his cage. Unfortunately for me, it wasn't my hamster, and I'd no option but to shoogle my clothes a bit, let it run off, and hope to never see it again.

However, when it comes to looks, not all spiders are creepy. Sure, they all have spindly legs and googly eyes, but sometimes, very rarely, they can be works of art. Don't believe me? Well, you have to see this newly-discovered spider that looks like Van Gogh's painting 'Starry Night'.

Unsurprisingly, the new species of spider was discovered in Australia - famed for its wonderful but often weird wildlife.

The new species is one of seven new species of peacock spider recently identified by Joseph Schubert of Australia's Museums Victoria.

On March 26, the spiders were unveiled by Schubert on Twitter. He wrote: "Last year I traveled the country collecting specimens of these new peacock spiders (some discovered by citizen scientists!) and spent countless hours in the lab studying them. Some welcome news in tough times."

According to a statement released by Museums Victoria, 22-year-old Schubert also identified five new species of peacock spider in 2019, meaning that he's now identified a total of 12 despite allegedly growing up scared of spiders!

Further information about the new species has been published in the journal Zootaxa.

"Some of the species in this paper were discovered by citizen scientists who documented the localities and sent images to me - their help is so important for this kind of research," Schubert added, per Fox News.

'Starry Night' is a painting of the San Remy in southern France from June 1889. It's currently housed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
