A woman has gone viral on Twitter after revealing that she poured water over her neighbor's son after he did the same to her cat.

When a woman by the name of Shannon Cooper revealed that threw a basin of water over her young neighbor after he had poured a cup of water over her pet cat, she ignited a Twitter debate about who was in the right.

She wrote: "My 10 year old neighbour just threw a cup of water over my cat who was sitting on the fence minding his own business n laughed so I threw a basin of water over him from the window and now his dad is at my door going mental but I don't see the problem, don't touch my cat."

Needless to say, this sparked an intense debate o the website about whether or not Shannon was right to pour water on the child, who she later revealed was actually 13 years old, he just "looks 10".

"[People] r so mad over this, the kid and his dad were laughing about it today, we r friends (also might I add the dad never knew what his son done which is why he was mad to begin with) also the kid is 13 he rlly looks fkn 10 lmao [sic]."

She added that after water was thrown over her cat, the child's father was angry at her for throwing water over her son, suggesting that the boy was going to receive no retribution for harming an innocent pet.

Like so many things on the internet, Shannon's actions had a divisive response. This is what some of her supporters had to say.

One Twitter user wrote: "BAHAHAHHAHA ITS WATER the dad needs to chill. He should teach his kid to be nice to animals. I would've answered the door to a bucket of water in his face [sic]."

They added: "[Cruelty] to animals is early signs of a serial killer too. they let this go unchecked?? their sons [sic] new home will be a cage."

A third wrote: "All these people defending the kid have not been around ten year olds. I know four year olds better behaved."

A fourth added: "They're rlly talking bout 'he's just 10, he doesn’t know any better' like what 10 year olds aren't dumb. I knew better at the age of 3."

[[twitterwidget||https://twitter.com/celestiix/status/1263312005219246082]]

A fifth remarked: "At 10 I used to stare at cats with my father in awe cause I couldn't have pets and at 3 I used talked to plants & trees cause my father told me they are living and feel hurt if you pluck leaves. What that kid need is better parenting."

Meanwhile, this is what some of Shannon's critics said about the incident.

One wrote: "I get your point but as a parent I would've been pissed too. If my child is doing wrong you come and talk to me about it and I will correct it."

A second added: "Do that to my son and I'm destroying everything of yours that’s in front of your house. I would have reprimanded him, had him make amends to you, and taught him a lesson. You retaliate against my child, and I retaliate against you. It's that simple."

[[twitterwidget||https://twitter.com/Fal_Neil/status/1263580926350508032]]

A third remarked: "Its v childish how you handled it you should had told the parents first so that they could punish their own kid... Like no that wouldn't hurt a kid but at the same time as a parent myself ID LIKE TO HANDLE MY KID because no its not right the kid did that but its also not yours."

A four wrote: "'I could have handled this like an adult, but instead decided to be -less- mature than the 10 year old' is a weird Twitter brag."

What do you think about Shannon's actions? Was she right to teach the boy a lesson herself or should she have told his parent and let them decide what the appropriate response was?
