Alessandra Ambrosio says that this Victoria’s Secret fashion show was her last

As if the 2017 Victoria's Secret fashion show hasn't already been difficult enough.

We had all the drama with visas being denied meaning top model Gigi Hadid, as well as performer Katy Perry, couldn't make it to Shanghai to take part. A few models took a tumble on the runway, Bella Hadid had a nip slip, and then the afterparty was shut down by police before it was even midnight.

Yeesh. And now to top it all off, a long-standing VS Angel and familiar face at the annual spectacle has announced that this show would be her last. Yes, it's true – Alessandra Ambrosio has confirmed to ET and in a personal Instagram post that she'll be hanging up her wings.

The news comes after a solid 17 years of working with the lingerie brand. Ambrosio's name is synonymous with Victoria's Secret and the 36-year-old has become one of the most beloved Angels after taking part in the annual show year after year.

The first VS show she walked in was in Cannes in 2000, and she later became an Angel in 2004 and the first official ambassador for PINK (VS's youthful sister brand) in 2006. She made Angel history after storming down the runway with a massive wing piece weighing in at a record-breaking 30 pounds in 2011.

Ambrosio was chosen twice to wear the prestigious Fantasy Bra – first in 2012 and then again in 2014 – each piece covered in precious stones and valued at a staggering $2 million, minimum. You know what else? She's walked in VS fashion shows while pregnant as well as three months postpartum.

It's fair to say she's got a huge list of achievements under her belt (garter?), and she'll be ending her long career with the brand on a high.

"Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have been working for this amazing brand that inspires me and women all over the world," she wrote in an Instagram post.

"In my wildest dreams I would have never imagined doing 17 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows. Thank you Ed, and all my Victoria’s Secret family for making these memories unforgettable. Last night was so emotional to say goodbye to my #angelsisters but we put on the biggest and best show ever."

Ambrosio was the one to close the show in Shanghai and wearing a brightly coloured lingerie set complete with floral wings, she said her final goodbye by blowing a kiss and waving to the runway.

She told ET that she was quitting the gig so she could spend more time looking after her two children, Anja, nine, and Noah, five. The Brazilian model has been with partner Jamie Mazur since 2008, and it's with him she shares her children.

She also wants to get into acting a bit more too. She's recently starred alongside Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg in Daddy's Home and Daddy's Home 2. Her acting debut was as one of the "tennis girls" in Casino Royale back in 2006.

As well as that, Ambrosio is also intending to spend more time on her swimwear line, Ale by Alessandra.

After 17 years, the model deserves a break from the runway. It also means a spot will open up among the Angel elite, and who is next to fill it will be interesting indeed. Maybe one of the Hadids? Or perhaps VS will use the opportunity to finally cast a more curvaceous, plus-sized model. Let's see.
