9 Real life scandals that got actors kicked off television shows
We all envy the lives of the top one per cent. When they're not busy walking red carpets (after being expertly made up by their glam squads), they're flying away on their private jets to exotic locales, frittering their millions away on designer goods, and whatever philanthropical cause has taken their fancy of late. But despite their riches, and freakish good looks, we can't forget that at the end of the day, celebrities are human too.
As such, they're also prone to the same dumb mistakes that we all make, as well as some decidedly larger ones that stem from the trappings of fame. And so you may be surprised to learn that some of your favourite celebs, including the ones who have won prestigious awards have, at one point or the other, been embroiled in their fair share of controversy. I mean, just have a read of these 9 scandals that got some very prominent figures kicked off popular television shows...
1. Isaiah Washington, Grey's Anatomy
After spending two years playing Dr. Preston Burke, things started to get a little rocky at Seattle Grace Hospital. Rumours began to circulate that Washington had made homophobic slurs towards his co-star, TR Knight. While he publicly apologised for his "unfortunate use of words", he later denied that he had ever "called TR a f***ot".
Knight hit back, stating that Washington had made the comment during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres. And ultimately, Grey's Anatomy didn't renew the actor's contact the following June. Washington's official statement on the matter was "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore."
2. Charlie Sheen, Two and a Half Men
Charlie Sheen's dismissal from Two and a Half Men caused quite the media frenzy. And it was all a result of his never-ending public critique of his producer, Chuck Lorre. It makes sense that he was very quickly shown the door.
3. Thomas Gibson, Criminal Minds
Gibson, who managed to play Aaron "Hotch" Hotchner for 11 seasons, had a series of altercations with the production crew on Criminal Minds. In one of the most infamous incidents, he had to get anger management therapy after getting physical with a producer. However, after just two episodes of the 12th season, his anger flared once more and he ended up kicking a writer in the shin after a dispute over the script.
The crew decided that enough was enough and dropped Gibson shortly after. The actor later admitted that "There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement". "I regret that it occurred," he continued.
4. Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros, Lost
On the 1st December in 2005, both Michelle and Cynthia were arrested in Hawaii for driving under the influence. By this point, Michelle had already been arrested three times for speeding in Hawaii (where the show was filmed) and had served time for a DUI. It was consequently quite the coincidence that both characters were killed off in the same episode shortly after.
5. Nicollette Sheridan, Desperate Housewives
After being unceremoniously cut from the hit television show, Sheridan filed a lawsuit against the show's creator, Marc Cherry, alleging assault and asserting that she was dismissed for bringing the charge to the attention of the network. In the eventual court hearing, both Sheridan's assault charge and unfair dismissal claim were thrown out.
6. Gary Dourdan, CSI
Despite official sources claiming that Dourdan parted amicably from the show, rumours have continued to circulate about his "personal problems". During the year that he left the show, Dourdan was arrested for possession of cocaine and ecstasy, and things didn't get much better after he parted ways from CSI. Three years later, he was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after crashing his car. And just four months later, he was arrested again, but this time for assaulting his girlfriend. The actor was eventually sentenced to five years probation, with a year of domestic violence and drug counselling.
7. Lisa Bonet, The Cosby Show
The actress was fired from the show in 1988 over "creative differences". This is largely believed to be a result of Bill Cosby disapproving of her appearing in a sex scene in the movie Angel Heart. Cosby ironically believed that it went against the essence of his "family friendly" show.
8. Taylor Momsen, Gossip Girl
Good ol' little J had quite the makeover during the third season of Gossip Girl and this all because she was dealing with quite the identity crisis. After deciding that acting was no longer for her, Momsen dedicated the majority of her time to her rock band, The Pretty Reckless. As a result, she started slacking on her Gossip Girl duties and sources on set asserted that "when she did show up she wasn't very level-headed". She was ultimately dismissed for being "unreliable and erratic".
9. Robert Downey Jr, Ally McBeal
By the time he was hired to play Larry Paul on the legal comedy-drama, Robert Downey Jr already had a history of substance abuse. Between 1996 and 2001, the actor was repeatedly arrested for possession of cocaine, marijuana and heroin, as well as for other drug paraphernalia.
Despite producers opting to give him another chance, he was quickly arrested again – this time for walking around Culver City barefoot, whilst under the influence of cocaine – and this was, naturally, the final straw.
Well there you have it, our heroes are fallible after all. Who would have known, eh?
