Breaking: Demi Lovato rushed to hospital for suspected drug overdose
Demi Lovato struggled with substance abuse for years. After checking into a sober living home and getting released from a treatment center, she was able to kick her addiction to alcohol, cocaine and Oxycontin. But after six years of sobriety, she appears to have fallen off the wagon.
TMZ reports that the 25-year-old singer was rushed to the hospital after an apparent heroin overdose. Sources say she was treated with Narcan, an emergency treatment for narcotic overdoses, and that the overdose occurred at her house in the Hollywood Hills. When paramedics arrived, she was unconscious.
Fans feared the worst, but fortunately Demi is okay. A source reported to People that she was in stable condition. Then Demi's aunt, Kerissa Dunn, posted a message on social media that she is "awake and responsive." Now the singer's representative issued a statement to TMZ: "Demi is awake and with her family who want to express thanks to everyone for the love, prayers and support. Some of the information being reported is incorrect and they respectfully ask for privacy ... "
Demi has been open about her battles with addiction and mental health. On March 15, she stopped a concert to tell the crowd she was celebrating her sixth year of sobriety. "Yesterday, six years ago, I was drinking vodka out of a Sprite bottle at 9 in the morning, throwing up in the car," said the singer. "And I just remember thinking, 'This is no longer cute. This is no longer fun. And I’m just like my dad.' So I took a look at my life and I said, ‘Something has to change, I’ve got to get sober’ — so I did."
She went on to give an empowering speech, hoping that the positive changes she made would inspire others. "Mental health is something that we all need to talk about, and we need to take the stigma away from it," said Demi. "So let’s raise the awareness. Let’s let everybody know it’s okay to have a mental illness, it’s okay to have an addiction problem. I’m bipolar — like, whatever!"
Just months after celebrating that six year milestone, Demi relapsed. The path to sobriety is never easy. In her documentary Simply Complicated, Demi opened up about her cocaine usage. The former Disney Channel star said, "I was sneaking cocaine on planes, I was sneaking it in bathrooms, sneaking it throughout the night. I went on a bender of like, two months, where I was using daily. ... I would fake my drug tests with other people's pee."
In an interview with Dr. Phil, Demi revealed that she considered suicide at just seven years old. Although those thoughts passed, they drove her to drugs and alcohol in her adolescence. "I was searching for something to numb me out and to fit in and I turned to alcohol and that's where I felt relief," said Demi. Recently she sang about these struggles in the single, Sober: "Momma, I’m so sorry I’m not sober anymore / Daddy, please forgive me for the drinks spilled on the floor ... To the ones who never left me, we’ve been down this road before."
We hope that the singer will get well. If you have been affected by any of the issues in this article, contact the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
