2017's sexiest man alive has just been announced and people have some feelings
While the old age adage informs us that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, I think we can all agree that that when someone's hot, they're just hot. Yeah, excessive facial hair and blonde hair may not be your thing, but you can still appreciate the fact that the majority finds them kind of irresistible. However, there are some people out there that are just so attractive that we're forced to put every personal preference we have aside, just to appreciate their perfection.
And since its inception in 1985, People Magazine's Sexist Man Alive have been honouring the gents who have the power to make anyone, regardless of age, race and gender swoon. Certainly, the publication has featured all of the genetic lottery winners, including Mel Gibson, Adam Levine, Bradley Cooper and, of course, the likes of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and David Beckham.
But this year's Sexiest Man Alive appears to have come out of the left field for some, after it was revealed to Blake Shelton. And don't worry, I asked "who?" too...
You're probably familiar with Blake Shelton for his career as a country music singer. He's also married to pop superstar Gwen Stefani, and has acted as a judge for the American version of reality television singing competition, The Voice. And whilst those are all great credentials, the people of the internet were pretty confused when People Magazine announced that he was also the sexiest man alive today.
I mean, sure Blake is certainly good looking, but in a world filled with the likes of Ryan Gosling and Chris Hemsworth (in fact, all of the Chris' are pretty nice to look at: Pratt, Pine, Evans... the list goes on), Blake can't be the first person who comes to mind when you think "ovary-exploding hot".
People from all around the world took to Twitter to express their surprise at the decision. One outraged user wrote "Even a straight man can see there's no way Blake Shelton is the sexiest man alive. I don't think he's even the sexiest man named Blake Shelton", while another corroborated: "Blake Shelton is People’s Sexiest Man Alive because apparently Idris Elba, Chris Evans and Jason Momoa fell off the planet last night."
And apparently Shelton had a similar reaction himself. Speaking to People Magazine in this week's cover story, he said that his initial thoughts were that "[People] must be running out of people". "Like, Wow, we’re down to somebody who is somewhat symmetrical," he continued.
He explained that Gwen Stefani, his girlfriend of two years, encouraged him to take the prestigious honour. "She goes, ‘Listen to me, you’re going to regret this for the rest of your life if you don’t take this gift and just live in the moment'," he stated.
The 41-year-old also clarified that he'd sure be having a lot of fun with the title:
"It’s going to be used in every conversation, whether it’s at The Voice, or at the feed in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, or in a conversation with a doctor. When [people] would say to Adam [Levine], ‘Mr. Sexy,’ you’d always see him go, ‘Well, awwww…’ If you say that to me, it’s going to be, ‘You’re damn right, I’m Mr. Sexy! I’ve been ugly my whole life, if I can be sexy for a year, I’m taking it. I’m taking it."
Well, congrats to Blake for taking the whole thing in his stride. I mean, you can hardly complain about being labelled as the sexiest man alive, can you?
