Demi Lovato speaks out over her struggles with dieting and body issues

Demi Lovato hasn't had the easiest time when it comes to body image issues, but she has matured to the point that she is strong enough to talk about her problems with the world, hopefully giving her fans someone to relate to when they are going through similar experiences.

During her childhood Lovato grew up with a mother who suffered from bulimia, with it greatly affecting how she felt about her own body. "Even though I was 2 or 3 years old, being around somebody who was 80 lbs and had an active eating disorder," she told American Way magazine, "it's hard not to grow up like that".

Even with these insecurities, she began competing in beauty pageants at the age of seven. However, as you can imagine, this didn't do much to affect these growing issues she had with her looks. “My body-image awareness started way before that, but I do attribute a little of my insecurities to being onstage and judged for my beauty,” the 25-year-old said.

This escalated as she grew older, with Lovato beginning to binge eat when she was nine, self-harming and purging at the age of 12. As her celebrity grew she turned to alcohol and drugs to self-medicate, which led her down a darker road. As the singer put it, “I lived fast and I was going to die young -I didn't think I would make it to 21.” She checked into rehab at 18 to deal with these issues, and has now said that she is "proud of [her] body" - but that doesn't mean it's smooth sailing from here.

Opening up to People magazine recently, the pop star spoke about how she still struggles with her own body positivity, even though she has conquered many of her demons:

"It’s a daily battle. Some days I feel great and some days I don't feel great. And sometimes it's periods of times"

"I stopped dieting and have gained a little weight so it’s been a struggle but at the same time, I’m happier because I’m not restricting myself from certain foods and I’m no longer food shaming myself.”

This has come again recently, as she tweeted about dieting at the end of January. In a series of tweets she spoke about how she was no longer going to shame herself for enjoying the food she eats:

“Feeling gross today at a photo shoot but I’m choosing to accept what I see because I love myself for who I am and your love and support gets me through moments like this if you’re struggling as well, don’t forget.. if I can do it, you can too!”

“No longer depriving myself of treats (in moderation) and I’m not gonna lie, I put on a couple lbs since I’ve given up dieting BUT I’ve given up the chronic stress of what I eat because I don’t want to set that example for my fans. No more food shaming myself!!”

While Lovato has had a lot to struggle with over the years, it's fantastic that she can now use her platform to speak about these issues and let any fans experiencing the same that they are not alone.
