Gwyneth Paltrow has been ridiculed on social media after saying she started the "face mask" trend prior to the outbreak of the COVID pandemic.

The controversy was first sparked after Paltrow spoke with The New York Times in a brand new interview.

In it, the 48-year-old Goop founder was asked about an old Instagram picture she uploaded prior to the outbreak of COVID-19 - which later led to the legally-enforced normalization of face coverings in public and during travel.

In a reference to the movie Contagion, which Paltrow starred in, the photo in question was captioned:

"En route to Paris. Paranoid? Prudent? Panicked? Placid? Pandemic? Propaganda? Paltrow’s just going to go ahead and sleep with this thing on the plane. I’ve already been in this movie. Stay safe. Don’t shake hands. Wash hands frequently."

In her New York Times interview, Paltrow outraged a number of social media users when she appeared to take credit for the current pandemic-driven ubiquity of face-coverings, stating:

"It's a familiar pattern in my life. I do something early, everyone is like: 'What is she doing? She’s crazy.' And then it’s adopted by culture."

Suffice it to say, but these comments have proven to be divisive, and now a number of Twitter users have taken to the platform to express their umbrage with these statements.

For instance, one person mockingly tweeted: "'i'm wearing a mask! i'm so ~weird and random~, but such is the life of a trendsetter. [sic]'"

Another person wrote laconically: "Glad she thinks a pandemic is funny."

A third critic chimed in: "Gwyneth, Asians wear mask around the world before February, since the 90s. It’s our culture. Also yoga is our culture too, you goop. [sic]"

Meanwhile, someone else wrote: "Gwyneth Paltrow engineered the Coronavirus. It's a Goop conspiracy."

Another incensed commenter added: "'the culture' is the most disgusting part of that sentence. [sic]"

Someone else tweeted: "Reminds me of when Gwyneth went on Fallon and started talking about Rolfing as if she invented it."

Finally, one final person wrote: "Imagine thinking that people are wearing masks to be like Gwyneth rather than to prevent the spread of a deadly disease. The f***ing hubris."

In a recent post on her health and wellbeing website, Paltrow revealed that she had come down with COVID last year, writing per The Independent: "I had Covid-19 early on, and it left me with some long-tail fatigue and brain fog.

"In January, I had some tests done that showed really high levels of inflammation in my body."
