Harry Styles sexually assaulted by fan as he performs live on stage
You wouldn't be mistaken for thinking that musicians such as Harry Styles have it all; dashing good looks, the adoration of women all around the globe, and all the other effluvia that comes hand-in-hand with fame (namely, money and power).
However, even the top one percent can fall victim to sexual assault. In fact, the insidious nature of sexual harassment and abuse in the upper echelons of the entertainment industry has captured the public consciousness of late. The New York Times' damning exposé on Harvey Weinstein prompted various household names such as Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cara Delevingne to come forward with their traumatising run-ins with the disgraced film mogul.
And now, video footage has surfaced of Harry Styles being sexually assaulted by a fan whilst performing on stage.
Disturbing footage shows the moment when the former One Direction member Harry Styles was sexually assaulted whilst he performed on stage at the Hollywood Bowl. Fans of the 23-year-old singer were quick to condemn the actions of audience members who appeared to grab at his crotch on Saturday evening in LA.
Twitter user @wanderessla shared a clip from Styles' performance where the star can be seen being grabbed at by several concert-goers. After Twitter noticed that Harry was groped during his set, @wanderessla posted a slow-motion version of the footage that she filmed from the crowd.
"Here’s a slowed down video of the video I took where someone touched Harry inappropriately", the Twitter user captioned the post.
The clip depicts Harry quickly removing himself from the wandering hands of audience members and continuing the performance, seemingly unfazed.
Many of Styles' fans took to Twitter to condemn the actions of those who saw fit to grab the musician inappropriately. Many people touched on the fact that despite being a public figure, Styles is still entitled to the freedom of his personal space. As one Twitter user corroborated, "WTF!!! When your favorite artist is close to you, this does not justify you touching him in this way," while others started using the hashtag "#RespectHarry".
This incident comes just weeks after allegations of sexual harassment and abuse were made against renowned film producer, Harvey Weinstein. This high-profile case has inspired legions of women to come forward to share their own stories of abuse in a viral "me too" thread which has been making the rounds on social media.
However, as multiple people have pointed out, the "me too" thread is not a conclusive look into how survivors of sexual assault and harassment deal with their trauma, as some survivors don't immediately share details of their experiences on the internet, and nor should they be expected to. As one Twitter user cogently surmised, "Reminder that if a woman didn't post #MeToo, it doesn't mean she wasn't sexually assaulted or harassed. Survivors don't owe you their story."
And whilst Harry Styles has yet to comment on the incident, it is encouraging to see that his fans are willing to speak up on his behalf. It indicates that not only are the public becoming more educated on matters such as sexual harassment, but that they are less likely to stand for it too.
