Katie Couric finally breaks her silence on the Matt Lauer scandal
Ever since Matt Lauer was fired from NBC due to allegations being aimed at the host surrounding sexual misconduct, the pressure has been on his co-host Katie Couric to come forward and speak about the accusations. So far, Katie had been widely criticised for refusing to come forward and condemn the 59-year-old's behaviour, however, she has now broken her silence.
In the weeks which have followed the initial allegations aimed at Matt Lauer, more women have come forward to accuse the presenter of sexual assault and harassment. The star also released a statement shortly after the allegations emerged, in which he apologised for his actions but denied some of the allegations.
"There are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions. To the people I have hurt, I am truly sorry. As I am writing this I realize the depth of the damage and disappointment I have left behind at home and at NBC."
"Some of what is being said about me is untrue or mischaracterized, but there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. I regret that my shame is now shared by the people I cherish dearly."
"Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I'm committed to beginning that effort. It is now my full-time job. The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws. It's been humbling. I am blessed to be surrounded by the people I love. I thank them for their patience and grace."
However, while Lauer had spoken out about the allegations, his co-star Katie Couric had remained silent. But, on Friday, an Instagram user by the name of Candace Taylor Benson, commented on a photo that Couric had uploaded, demanding that she break her silence. In a fairly aggressively worded comment, Benson said: “Nothing to say on Matt?? Huh – y’all would have been all over the story years ago. I watched y’all for YEARS. My childhood. Just goes to show you really can’t trust people. He interviewed people on their moral character and had none himself. I want time back I spent watching!!!!! and you have nothing to say. Crickets. People hear you loud and clear though."
Surprisingly, Couric responded to the strongly-worded comment. Her response was short and firm, with the presenter saying: “It’s incredibly upsetting and I will say something when I’m ready to. Thanks for your interest."
Since the allegations, which seem to be growing by the day, old footage of Lauer has been emerging on the internet. One interview, from 2012, appears to show Couric joking about Lauer's inappropriate behaviour towards her. In the clip, Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen asks what Lauer's "most annoying habit" was, and Couric responds with: "he pinches me on the ass a lot."
By the looks of Couric's Instagram account, it seems like she is still taking time to process the allegations aimed at her former co-host Hopefully, sooner rather than later, she will come forward with a statement as there are many questions that need answering and the women who are speaking up need to know they are being listened to.
