Kim Kardashian has been accused of cultural appropriation after wearing a religious Hindu symbol as earrings.

The reality star, 40, prompted the accusations by tweeting a series of photographs of herself posing while wearing the Om, the central sacred symbol of Hinduism, as earrings.

Slamming the earrings, one Twitter user wrote: "Kim, are you hindu [sic]? Why are you wearing the om earrings?"

A second added: "STOP CULTURAL APPROPRIATION OF INDIAN CULTURE!!! WHAT'S UP WITH THOSE EARINGS GIRLLLL???"

A third wrote: "Is now a good time to mention that the Om is a sacred symbol to Hindus and not just an accessory?"

Meanwhile, a fifth simply wrote: "WHEN WILL YOU UNDERSTAND THAT A RELIGION IS NOT AN AESTHETIC."

But not everyone was so critical of Kim's decision to wear the symbol as earrings and some, including Hindus themselves, argued that it was completely inoffensive.

"I don't see this as disrespect at all. How can you assume beyond reasonable doubt that she's ignorant about its origins?" wrote one Twitter user. "Because she's a Kardashian? Prejudice. And lowering Hinduism to a 'religion' is short-sighted in the first place. [Om] is so much more than a 'sacred' symbol.'"

A second added: "Hi Kim ..cool style ...I am a Hindu, actually a Rajput and a proud Indian....n I love ur style ... Religion is about tolerance ....if we can wear a Cross or Om in pendant ...thn we can took ur earrings in the right spirit too ... [sic]"

This is not the first time Kim has found herself in hot water over alleged instances of cultural appropriation.

Earlier this year, she was accused of cultural appropriation after wearing long braids at Kanye West's Paris Fashion Week show.

"Just because your daughter is mixed and your husband is black doesn't mean you are," wrote one Twitter user.

Another corroborated: "Bruh why do you keep doing this? You think she’d learn. Put your hair up in a high pony and go to the fashion show like everyone else."
