Matthew McConaughey has slammed the hypocrisy of Hollywood's "illiberal left" for mocking Donald Trump supporters.

The actor made the comments while appearing on Russell Brand's podcast Under the Skin, where he slammed those condemning Trump voters for refusing to accept the result of the 2020 election when many people found themselves in a similar position when Hilary Clinton lost in 2016.

This woman was distraught after discovering that her daughter voted for Joe Biden in the election:

When asked if McConaughey had noticed a "condemnation" of everyday voters by his Hollywood colleagues, the actor said: "There are a lot [of people] on that illiberal left that absolutely condescend, patronize, and are arrogant towards the other 50 percent."

McConaughey said that this view resulted in people being "in absolute denial" when Trump was first elected to office in November 2016.

Brand agreed, stating: "[There is] a kind of offhandedness, like, 'Oh, they're dumb, they're voting for Brexit, they're voting for Trump.'

He said: "I don't like it, and I don't like to hear it."

McConaughey said that following Joe Biden’s projected presidential victory, Trump supporters have been left in denial because "they've been fed fake news".

"[Now] it looks like Biden's our guy," he said, adding; "Now you've got the right that's in denial, cause their side has fake news. And I understand, they've been fed fake news.

"No one knows what the hell to believe, right? So they're putting down their last bastion of defense."

The actor explained that the "other two sides of the political aisle are so far apart" and that the left's mocking of Trump supporters will only cause resentment between the two sides to grow.

"Don't tab that gotcha at the end," he said. "The left will have to understand the science of 'meet you in the middle'."

He said that the far left's attitude toward the right is ultimately preventing the two sides from coming together, something which Biden himself wants to happen, as he hopes to create a "United States," as opposed to "red states" and "blue states".

McConaughey also promoted his new memoir Greenlights while appearing on the podcast.
