Shocked woman from the Beyonce Grammys meme describes the moment she met the superstar
They say you should never meet your heroes. There's always the chance that they will disappoint you if you've put them on a pedestal, or they might just be rude with no time to spend talking to yet another fan. There's no way to know for sure, but it's a dangerous game to get your hopes up that there will be a magical interaction between the two of you.
This is the case for plenty of people out there we admire, but there are certain celebrities that are so famous and beloved that meeting them is a next-level experience. Say if you were to bump into someone like Beyoncé - you'd probably freak out a little, right? Well that's exactly what this woman did when she came across the singer in a New York hotel last week, seen mouth agape in shock when Beyoncé and Jay-Z strolled by.
This reaction was noticed by many after the photo was shared as part of a photoset on Beyoncé's Instagram account about her night at the Grammys, with plenty of fans of the pop star relating to this honest response to the meeting.
The woman in question, Susan Monaghan, has now told her side of the story, after an interview with The Boston Globe this week. She was in the big apple with her family, attending her granddaughter's gymnastics competition and celebrating the birthday of her daughter Jenn in the same trip. She decided to take the elevator back to her room while her relatives were still in the lobby.
Once she got to her floor she noticed an entourage of security guards and photographers, and realized that whoever was heading her was clearly going to be a big deal. "I think it's hysterical. Strange things happen to me," she told The Boston Globe, explaining, "I swear. I felt like I was hugged by an angel".
"I'm thinking in my mind, 'Who this?' I looked at [Jay-Z] and he looked tall, and thin, and had curly hair, and was really good-looking. I looked at her and all I could think was, 'No one is going to believe me. No one is going to believe me'."
She was so gobsmacked that she started saying this out loud, at which point Beyoncé smiled and told her, "Don't worry, it's going to be okay".
"It was so calming and so surreal. And then I realized, and I turned back, I was talking to Jay-Z. It was really funny," she said.
Her daughter and granddaughter didn't believe the story, as she expected, until the photo began circulating the next day. "We started dying laughing," Jenn said. "And she’s like, 'I told you I met them!'"
When asked why she thought Beyoncé shared the image, which received 4 million likes, she said: "I think she posted it for me. So people would believe me." Whether or not this is true, she's definitely got her proof of the encounter.
