Tom Cruise 'leaving Scientology' for an important reason
In 1990, Tom Cruise made the decision to join the Church of Scientology. At the time, he was married to Mimi Rogers, and it was her who converted the Mission Impossible actor to the cause. Since then, he's been a loyal follower, and has even credited the religion with helping him to overcome his dyslexia.
However, in his later marriage to Katie Holmes, it was Scientology that drove them apart. Citing the religion as grounds for their divorce, Holmes separated from Cruise, and their daughter, Suri, was also ex-communicated as a member.
Now, nearly three decades after he first committed to the movement, it seems that Cruise himself might go the same way, as rumors have been flying about that the actor is planning to quit.
Speaking with Star, an anonymous source stated that Cruise was considering leaving the church for the sake of his daughter.
"He has reached the breaking point, and something has to give," they said. "If he wants her [Suri] back, he’ll have to walk away from the church, which has been a huge part of his life, to say the least."
Cruise's relationship with Suri has understandably taken a few knocks since he split with her mother, and the restrictions imposed on him by the church (as well as Holmes' opinions of Scientology) have driven a wedge between the pair. Some reports have even suggested that the actor hasn't had any contact with his child since his divorce, but this has not been verified by the actor.
However, turning his back on the cult religion is not as simple as it sounds.
"Leaving Scientology would be the toughest decision he’ll ever have to make! If Scientology declared open season on Tom, they could bury him, since they’ve probably got all sorts of dirt on him from his audit sessions," the source disclosed. "It’s an unspoken threat, but Tom has to be aware that the church would do everything in its power to keep him from leaving."
According to another source, who spoke to Celebrity Insider, Katie Holmes is saddened that Cruise does not currently have a good relationship with Suri, and would love for him to be a part of her life.
"It breaks Katie’s heart Suri does not have a relationship with Tom, there is a hole in her life because of it - he’s missed," the source said. "Katie is such a daddy’s girl herself; she cannot imagine a life without a close relationship with her father. But unfortunately, that is the reality for Suri."
During its relatively short history, the Church of Scientology has been the subject of multiple controversies. In the past, they've been found to have infiltrated the US government, and its leader, David Miscavige, has been accused of physically beating his staff.
While Cruise has only ever had positive things to say about the organization, it appears as if many of his fans and followers would be happier to see him leave the religion - especially if it means he can have a relationship with his daughter again.
