Recent headlines might be dominated by the new streaming service Disney+, but Netflix remains, as ever, a hub of entertainment, and excitement is growing for its latest series, The Witcher, which some have tipped to be the new Game of Thrones.

Based on a video game of the same name, the series follows the life of a monster hunter, who struggles to find his place in, as Netflix put it, "a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together."

Sounds pretty enticing, right? And if the premise wasn't enough to make you tune in, reactions to the trailer on social media almost certainly will be, especially after Game of Thrones' much anticipated final season proved to be highly divisive.

One commentator wrote: "The fight scenes in The Witcher make Game of Thrones fight scenes look like two drunks fighting outside a bar."

While comparisons to Game of Thrones are inevitable, The Witcher's star, Royce Pierreson, who plays Istredd said that viewers should be cautious not to compare the shows too much.

"It's an amazing ensemble piece," he told Digital Spy. "And every character has their own journey and their own story. The Witcher has its own world and universe."

"[It] has its own proper characters and their own struggles. And I think that's what people will see and really connect with."

"It's a huge scale project - it's very intimate in terms of the character studies, which is what I love," Pierreson continued. "When it comes to taking a role, that’s the most important thing."

The Witcher will be available to stream on Netflix on December 20.
