An upcoming animated Disney movie, Onward, will feature an openly LGBTQ character voiced by actress and screenwriter Lena Waithe.

Waithe's character, a purple cyclops, will be a police officer who makes a reference to her girlfriend when she pulls over a driver who is distracted by his own girlfriend's children, according to Slate.

"My girlfriend's daughter got me pulling my hair out," the character, Officer Specter, says according to the publication. Slate also reports that the character's girlfriend never actually appears on screen.

In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, the producer of Onward, Kori Rae, talked about how the character came to be.

“It just kind of happened,” Rae said.

She added: “The scene, when we wrote it, was kind of fitting and it opens up the world a little bit, and that’s what we wanted."

The film's director, Dan Scanlon, said of the decision to include the character: “It’s a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world."

While Officer Specter is the first animated character to be portrayed as openly LGBTQ, Disney has included some other LGBTQ characters in their live-action movies.
