Hilarious footage shows Katy Perry stuck in mid-air on platform during Nashville concert
Katy Perry is getting quite a name for herself in onstage malfunctions. And with her very over-the-top and elaborate set designs, it's not hard to see why. Who can forget her 2015 Superbowl performance, where one of her backup dancers – later glorified and memorialised as Left Shark – stole the show and everyone's hearts with his gangly and out of sync dance moves.
And just earlier this year, another of Perry's dancers (this time dressed as a house) fell off the stage during a performance of Chained To The Rhythm at the BRIT Awards. I could go into the epic disaster that was Perry's music video for her somewhat irreverent diss track Swish Swish, but that's not technically a stage malfunction (just wanted mention again how cringe-worthy that was).
So in the latest of Katy Perrt stage fails, she got stuck in space. During a performance at Nashville’s Bridgewater Arena, the singer sat atop a dangling planet (it was a replica of Saturn, in case you're curious) before something went haywire and the damned thing didn't want to return to earth. So there was Perry, mid-air after having finished a rendition of Thinking Of You, wondering how the heck she was going to get down.
“This is the first time I've been stuck in space,” the pop diva joked, sitting helplessly on the dangling planet platform in a sparkly wig and gown ensemble, clutching a white acoustic guitar.
“I know I'm kind of a space cadet but actually, this thing is stuck. I could be stuck here forever."
She made light of the situation while also revealing how her stage crew was making a "whole big deal" of the technical trouble, something she no doubt could hear through her in-ear monitor.
“What should I do? Should I tell some jokes, should I tell some stories, should I just sing another song?”
The star noted how “beautiful” her fans looked from up there, before inviting them to share the bizarre situation: “You’d better put your phones up, it’s a YouTube moment!”
'This is not how the show is [supposed to be] going, and you love it."
The stage managers were able to slowly lower the planet down, but not quite all the way to the floor. Perry soon realised that she would have to do a kind of stagedive so as not to crush the audience below with her planet.
"I guess I'm just going to have to get down and walk amongst my people," she said in mock defeat. "I love this so much. This is what you get for trying to bring out all of space to Nashville. Should I just like, jump?”
Sure enough, Perry ended up doing an awkward little dive into the audience, before being escorted back to the main stage by her security guards. Looks like she had a whole bundle of fun, making the most of her mishap, and later tweeting that she had an incredible time at the show.
It's great that she can laugh off the hiccups in her performances when they happen. I mean, she even invited Left Shark back on stage in monumental celebration at the Nashville concert before the planet situation.
