Following the success of Netflix's Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, a new docuseries is set to explore one of the show's biggest plot points: did Big Cat Rescue owner and self-proclaimed animal advocate Carole Baskin have anything to do with her husband's disappearance?

In the hit true-crime series Tiger King, viewers learn that Carole's husband, Don Lewis, whom she met when she was 20 and he was 42, mysteriously disappeared in 1997 without a trace. To this day, it remains an unsolved case.

And for Baskin's rival Joe Exotic, and others including Lewis' first wife, there was no doubt in their minds that she was somehow involved in his disappearance. A claim that she has strongly denied.

Following the release of the seven-part Tiger King, Carole's new husband, Howard Baskin slammed the contents of the documentary, accusing its editors of sensationalizing the truth in a bid to draw more viewers.

News of the new series exploring Don Lewis' disappearance was released in a statement by American crime documentary channel Investigation Discovery (ID).

The channel said in a statement cited by Entertainment Weekly: "Love her or hate her, Carole is now in the center ring of the big cat circus.

"Is she a selfless crusader and protector of animals, who found unimaginable strength despite the mysterious disappearance of her husband? Or are we witnessing Carole Baskin's master plan finally take effect? Despite her claims of innocence, did she orchestrate the disappearance of Don Lewis to seize control of his fortune, consolidate power and lay waste to her foes.

"No one seems to be talking - except for one man - and that man is the center of ID's upcoming investigative series."

Needless to say, the man who is willing to talk is Joe Exotic, real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage, who is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence for animal abuse and a murder-for-hire plot to kill Baskin.

ID adds that the unofficial spin-off series is the "the investigation you didn't get to see, revealing the secrets only Joe knows and the exclusive footage that has never been shown".

Following the success of Tiger King, Florida police issued a renewed plea for information about the disappearance of Don Lewis.
