Nicole Kidman reveals why she kissed Alexander Skarsgård on the lips at the Emmys
Can we just go back and talk about that time earlier this year where Nicole Kidman smooched her coworker Alexander Skarsgård on the lips, right in front of her husband of 11 years, Keith Urban? It left everyone bewildered, yet nothing has really been said about it since.
The 50-year-old Australian actress and producer was at the Emmy's looking gorgeous in a swish red dress, AND she cleaned up the Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series, in the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies. Kidman starred in the series alongside Reese Witherspoon, and the two were also executive producers of the show.
Also in the series was Swedish actor and certified hunk, Alexander Skarsgård. He picked up an award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series for Big Little Lies, and it seems no-one was more happy for him than Kidman.
People were baffled. She clutches his face with both hands, and without hesitation goes in for a full-on smooch on the lips. And yes, that's her husband standing by and clapping at what he's seeing.
I mean, no disrespect to Kidman – who would be able to resist puckering up to the devastatingly handsome Swede? It's just that... no-one explained the kiss. Was Urban fine with it? Did Kidman really know what she was doing? How did it make Skarsgård feel?
But now, finally, we have some answers. Kidman was a guest on The Graham Norton Show this week, and the host hastily congratulated Kidman on her award before shuffling the conversation to that kiss with a greedy look in his eyes.
“You are so provocative, Graham,” Kidman said, clearly embarrassed after he produced a picture of the kiss in front of her and the audience. She was quick to defend herself by saying, “I also kissed my husband, too.”
“I did kiss [Skarsgård], but you gotta understand, I did everything with Alex,” she went on to explain.
"We saw it!" Norton teased in response. Kidman went on the clarify the situation.
“I’ve got an amazing, supportive, gorgeous husband who I love more than anything in the world, and I gave Alex a congratulatory kiss, and he’s like a mannequin.”
“I mean, not a mannequin,” Kidman blurted, cringing and laughing at herself for making the situation worse. “I’m done,” she said in defeat.
Norton then asked about what Urban did to celebrate the actress's 50th birthday earlier this year.
“He did some fireworks and..." Kidman said, before chuckling and adding that they did “other stuff” too. Norton looks around himself as the audience bursts out laughing and says "And we'll draw veil there".
Kidman's birthday was in June, around the same time when she and the Australian musician celebrated their 11th wedding anniversary. The two met in 2005 before marrying a year later in Sydney, Australia. They have two daughters together: Sunday Rose, 8, and Faith Margaret, 6.
When accepting her Emmy, Kidman made an impassioned speech and thanked her husband and their kids. "I have two little girls – Sunnie and Faith," she said. "And my darling Keith who I asked to help me pursue this artistic path. And they have sacrificed so much for it. So this is yours."
Looks like we can lay to rest our speculations about that kiss.
