Guy wins MMA event after buying ticket to attend as a fan

We've all had the dream.

Minutes prior to the tip off of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals, Lebron James sprains his ankle while performing an inadvisable reverse 360 dunk during shootaround, and for some reason that doesn't quite seem clear to anyone, there's nobody on the Cavaliers roster eligible to take his place.

Thank goodness, then, that you are wearing your Cavs jersey in the crowd, as you are nudged forwards by indefinable forces, blinking, bewildered as the glare of a hundred flashing cameras capture your confusing presence on the court.

There's no time to ponder the bizarre circumstances under which you have ended up starting at small forward for a championship contender, though, because the buzzer has sounded, Jeff Van Gundy has taken his seat alongside Mark Jackson and Mike Breen, Dwyane Wade is eyeing you uncertainly and at some point during proceedings you've been given an arm warmer and some new hi-tops. It's time to play.

Whether your dream develops into an altogether pleasant experience, or takes a downward spiral into a nightmare as you miss layup after layup and seem unable to move any faster that at a slow jog, you will most likely be familiar with a somewhat similar reverie to this one.

For Luis Felipe Alvim, though, fantasy very quickly became reality when he stepped in to an MMA fight in place of an overweight would be contender.

Carlos Eduardo Rufino was slated to fight Claudinei Kall, but failed to make weight, ending up almost a pound over the limit. Kall initially agreed to fight the heavier man, but reneged on the idea minutes before the fight was scheduled to start, leaving an empty slot and seemingly no one to fill it.

Enter 22-year-old MMA fan Luis Felipe Alvim, who saw an opportunity to take part in the fight after hearing about the situation from friends;

"I told Felipe Silva I’d fight, that I’d put on a show, but a new fight was already booked.

"40 minutes before the main event, this guy chickened out and they offered me the fight again."

In a stunning turn of events, he stepped up and took the fight, having never participated in a mixed martial arts bout before. Initially it seemed he had waded into some very deep waters after being continually taken down by his opponent, but, astonishingly, he turned the fight on its head, as he describes;

"He took me down and landed some heavy shots, and I thought ‘oh sh*t, what the f*ck am I doing here?’.

"When I locked the triangle I thought to myself, ‘sh*t, I’ll catch him.’ I asked God ‘please, don’t let this round end’".

Still bristling with energy from his unlikely victory, Alvim seized the moment once again in the wake of the bout when he got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend.

"I showed my girlfriend — my fiancee now — the trailer of the movie Troy yesterday in which this kid tells Achilles he’d never fight a giant, like Achilles was about to do, and Achilles says ‘that’s why your name won’t be remembered.’ That stuck in my mind."

There's no way anyone who witnessed Alvim's efforts on his MMA debut will be forgetting him in a hurry.
