A man has angered his wife after suggesting that they name their baby after an ex-girlfriend who had sadly passed away.

Deciding what to name a child can take the full nine months as it's a huge decision that the newborn will probably have to carry for their entire life.

Some couples debate whether to find out the gender of their child, and those that do can at least narrow down their search for the best name.

Ideas for names can come from anywhere - including some who name their children after their favorite TV characters - but suggesting the name of an ex-partner seems a bit odd.

This is what one father-to-be proposed when he was suggesting baby names to his partner, and she clearly didn't take too kindly to it, so he asked Reddit for advice.

Posting on the popular Am I The A**hole thread, he said: "I (34M) and my wife (31F) are expecting a child in 12 weeks time. We don't know the sex of the baby but we've started thinking about baby names. A couple of nights ago we were suggesting names.

"I had a girlfriend for around 6 years before meeting my now wife. Unfortunately she passed away and I was absolutely devastated. It's still painful to think about and I always imagined naming a child in her memory. I also just love the name itself (Nancy)."

He went on to explain that his wife felt uneasy about the suggestion, claiming that naming a child after an ex-partner is a "strange" thing to do.

The original poster added a further edit to the post where he explained that he and Nancy split up two years before she passed away, but remained good friends.

The mother-to-be kept bringing it up out of anger and disbelief, prompting the man to ask Reddit for their thoughts, and they were quick to speak their minds.

One person said: "Yeah... YTA [you're the a**hole]. Not how you intended it, but it comes across [as] hey wife you're my second choice, so lets name our kid after what would have been my first choice."

A second person said: "It’s okay to still feel sad, but your wife does not need a daily reminder of your ex girlfriend. I’ll be damned if I grow a baby for nine months just to name it after my husbands ex. You need to show more respect to your wife and ask her to forgive you."

Others suggested that the poster may be grieving the loss of his ex-girlfriend without even realizing it and that it was unfair to project that onto his wife.

The couple has since agreed on the name, and we hope this suggestion didn't cause too much of a rift between them.
