This terrifying faceless makeup illusion will blow your mind
Seriously guys, let's take a moment to really think about the amazing illusion that makeup is. I mean, I'm still amazed at how concealer can hide the vampiric circles under my eyes and make it look like the absolute monument of a pimple protruding from my chin isn't even there.
THEN there are the people who take the power of makeup and use it to create something truly magical. There's the girl who had everyone convinced she did some kind of surgical procedure to look like a Bratz Doll. Or the cosplayer who can literally turn into any character, from Captain Jack Sparrow to Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman.
And now here's a woman who can paint incredible illusions onto her face, and even make it look like she's got no face at all.
Mimi Choi is a 31-year-old makeup artist from Vancouver, Canada, and she's made quite a name for herself with the amazing makeup looks she's come up with. From slicing, dicing, and elongating certain parts of her face, her creations really make you look twice.
“My face is a blank canvas where I can practise my art”, Choi told Metro. And it was literally a blank face that really left a lasting impression on everyone. Her "faceless" makeup look gives the illusion that all her facial features are gone, replaced with a bottomless black hole inverting to the back of her head.
Are you ready for it? Okay, here it is.
Yikes! It looks incredibly convincing, thanks to the (although anatomically incorrect) layers of flesh Mimi drew to create the 3D effect. She cites a bronze sculpture by Salvadore Dali, Surrealist Newton, as her inspiration.
"When I do illusions now, I draw my inspiration mostly from my surroundings, photography, paintings, and emotions. I try not to look at other makeup artists' work too much and challenge myself to produce original, unique work," she told Allure.
Mimi's works are so realistic that people often accuse her of using Photoshop. However, she's assured people that it's purely down to cosmetics, and she even posted a video showing her opening and closing her mouth and eyes to prove it.
While she said this look only ("only") took 1.5 hours, some creations can take around five hours to finish.
"My main goal each time I do a new look is to beat myself from yesterday because I'm the biggest critic and competition to myself. It's gotten really hard to impress myself these days but it motivates me to keep trying and doing better."
She took her faceless look further, this time hollowing out her eyes and mouth. The results are equally as creepy as the original.
Mimi previously worked as a teacher, and although she enjoyed it, she wasn't entirely happy and felt she needed a new challenge. She started experimenting and learning about the possibilities of makeup art in her parents' bathroom. It clearly paid off, as can be seen by the incredible creativity of her designs.
