As reported by The Independent, another 393 people have died in the UK after contracting the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours - taking the nation's total to 1,808.

The largest jump came in England, where the NHS Trusts reported the deaths of 367 patients. A further ten death were reported in Scotland, another seven deaths in Wales, and six in Northern Ireland.

Per the NHS, the victims in England were aged between 19 and 98 years old, and all but 28 patients had underlying health conditions. The medical body added that the 19-year-old victim did not have underlying health conditions.

Today's numbers come after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson - who is currently self-isolating after being diagnosed with COVID-19 - told the cabinet by videolink: "The situation is going to get worse before it gets better – but it will get better."

A spokesperson for Downing Street said: "The PM said the rising death toll in recent days showed the vital importance of the public continuing to stick to the social distancing guidance which has been put in place by the government, based on scientific and medical advice."
