Here's the everyday item of clothing Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton can't wear in front of the Queen

Since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement at the back-end of last year, much has been made of the traditions and conventions that she has been breaking. Whether it's her decision to do a speech at the wedding itself, or the fact that she is a divorcee and former actress who starred in several raunchy scenes, Markle has set about on a one-woman mission to change the perception of the Royal Family for the better.

Add into the mix that she is the first woman of colour to marry into the family and you can see why Meghan is quickly becoming everyone's favourite royal. However, it's not just with fans of the family the Markle seems to be smashing her new role out of the park with. According to various reports, the former actress has proven to be quite the hit with the Queen herself.

Over the festive period, Meghan was invited to spend time with the Queen and her family; an invite which is never usually extended to those who are engaged, as they usually have to wait until they're married. Unfazed by the invite, Meghan went along and handed out presents that had the Royal family crying with laughter.

A source close to the family said:

"Meghan bought a little hamster that sings with a little rope for Her Majesty.

It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy.

She laughed and said, ‘They can keep my dogs company!’"

Not done there, Meghan clearly gets on with William and bought him a present which made light of his baldness.

“She bought William a Scottish cap with ginger hair.

It was very funny – he saw the funny side too thankfully!”

However, while Meghan may have gone down as a hit with her future in-laws, there are some things she must not do in order to stay on the good side of the Queen. Both Meghan and Kate Middleton have been told that they must not wear a certain item of clothing in front of Her Majesty.

While they may majorly contrast in the clothes they wear, with Meghan being more glamorous than Kate, what they wear on their feet is a key issue with the Queen. A source close to the family claims that Elizabeth is not a fan of wedges, so much so that she doesn't want them anywhere near her.

"The Queen isn't a fan of wedge shoes.

She really doesn't like them and it's well known among the women in the family."

Kate is often spotted out in wedges when on royal visits but she has never worn them in front of her husband's grandmother. It's more than likely that Meghan will also follow this strict rule, but given that she has broken several royal conventions already, don't be surprised to see her turning up at Buckingham Palace in a pair of wedges sometime soon.

So there you have it: The Queen hates wedges. Thank god she doesn't have to deal with a night out in a regular inner-city club, she would have a heart attack.
