Barack Obama has spoken out about wife Michelle's goal to never be caught on camera in a swimming costume.

Speaking to Vanity Fair about his new memoirs, The Promised Land, Obama was questioned by Jesmyn Ward regarding comments he makes in the book about family beach trips.

"There’s that part when you go to the beach with Sasha, and Michelle doesn’t go, and she says that was her one aim as first lady: to never be captured on film in a bathing suit," Ward says, adding: "I couldn’t stop laughing."

In response, the former president says: "Well, she wasn’t joking about that."

Obama added: "She was serious. 'This is one of my main goals as first lady. I will not be photographed by the paparazzi in a bathing suit.' And she succeeded."

And it would appear as if Michelle succeeded on her modest goal, as The Independent reports that over Obama's eight-year presidency, the former first lady was never pictured in a bathing suit.

However, in 2018, Michelle was photographed on a Miami beach wearing a white bikini top.

Despite receiving many compliments on her stunning casual look, Michelle was also the subject to criticism and cruel comments from social media users - with some people attacking the mom-of-two's weight or that she was "too old" to wear a bikini.

During the promotional tour of his book, Barack Obama has also claimed that Republicans have wrongly portrayed white males as "victims" in a bit to secure votes in the recent presidential election.

Per The Guardian, Obama made the comments in a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club on Wednesday (November 25), while promoting his newly-published memoir A Promised Land.

Obama previously gave the following advice to incumbent Republican President Donald Trump:

The former POTUS claimed that this politically-motivated complex of white martyrdom was part of the reason why incumbent President Donald Trump received more than 73 million votes in the 2020 elections.

Speaking with radio host DJ Envy, Obama stated:

"What's always interesting to me is the degree to which you've seen created in Republican politics the sense that white males are victims.

"They are the ones who are under attack – which obviously doesn't jive with both history and data and economics. But that's a sincere belief that's been internalized. That’s a story that’s being told, and how you unwind that is going to be not something that is done right away."

Obama also spoke about some of the pressures he faced under his administration to empower black communities and fight racial prejudice and inequality.

Obama said: "When I was elected there was so much excitement and hope, and I also think we generally view the presidency as almost like a monarchy in the sense of once the president’s there, he can just do whatever needs to get done and if he’s not doing it, it must be because he didn’t want to do it."
