Former DNC chair blows the whistle on corruption and anti-Sanders bias

For over a year since the 2016 Democratic Primary, the left has fractured while the right has united. Supporters of Bernie Sanders alleged that the DNC, the organization which determines the Democratic nominee, was biased against Sanders and 'rigged' the primary in Hillary Clinton's favor. Clinton's camp, as well as most of the establishment media, from Slate to The Atlantic, dismissed Sanders supporters as bitter and conspiratorial. The suggestion that the DNC was 'corrupt' was considered wholly unreasonable, relegated to the fringes.

Now, Donna Brazile, who was the chairperson of the DNC from July 28th of last year until this February, has penned a scathing piece for Politico in which she reveals the extent of what she knew from her time as chairperson of the DNC. The piece, titled "Inside Hillary Clinton's Secret Takeover of the DNC", alleges that Hillary Clinton's campaign had funneled massive amounts of money to a Hillary Victory Fund as early as 2015, far before she had won the nomination.

Informed of this, a shocked Brazille had asked:

“Wait, that victory fund was supposed to be for whoever was the nominee, and the state party races. You’re telling me that Hillary has been controlling it since before she got the nomination?”

“That was the deal that Robby [Hillary's campaign manager] struck with Debbie [the former DNC chairperson],” explained Gary Gensler, Hillary's chief financial officer for the Clinton campaign. “It was to sustain the DNC. We sent the party nearly $20 million from September until the convention, and more to prepare for the election.”

Here's where it gets worse.

The money in the Hillary Victory Fund was supposed to go to state races and the nominee. Instead, it all went to the Clinton campaign, effectively sabotaging the many Democratic congressional elections in the states where money was instead sent to Hillary's campaign in Brooklyn. Of course, Democrats lost the Senate and the House in 2016.

The DNC was massively in debt. Barack Obama left the organization $24 million in debt, and the Democratic Party was effectively broke. When Donna Brazile was chair of the DNC, five years ago, the monthly 'burn rate' for money needed to sustain the organization was half of what it now was in 2016. The DNC under Clinton's campaign was now spending 3.5 million to 4 million dollars every month. The reason?

Obama and Washington consultants were being paid out of the DNC fund, ballooning its expenses. The portrait of a failing Democratic Party couldn't be clearer: massively in debt, wasting money on consultants who failed to beat Donald Trump, and siphoning money from nationwide races to focus it all on Hillary since 2015, before she was even elected as nominee, the party was in shambles.

Shockingly, the DNC is technically allowed to be biased toward a certain candidate. That was the ruling on a lawsuit against the DNC this August, which was struck down by a judge on that very premise - it's okay for the DNC to not be democratic, to not listen to the voters, and to choose a candidate ahead of primary elections. A Newsweek reporter wrote:

“The DNC reportedly argued that the organization’s neutrality among Democratic campaigns during the primaries was merely a ‘political promise,’ and therefore it had no legal obligations to remain impartial throughout the process."

The lawyer representing the DNC, Bruce Spiva, said: "The party could have favored a candidate. I’ll put it that way.”

So, what's the big deal, right? The primary is over, and Sanders lost anyway. Who cares?

Well, the wasteful, broken and incompetent DNC that did all this is the very same DNC that will go against Donald Trump in 2020. If we truly wish to be rid of Trump, and the DNC is our only pathway to that end, aren't we relying on a corrupt organization that in all likelihood will not change its ways?

This is very bad news for the Democratic Party.
