President-elect Joe Biden has become the first presidential candidate in US history to win more than 80 million votes.

As per CNN, this record number of popular votes is likely to increase in the coming days as ballots from the 2020 presidential election continue to be counted.

As of this writing on November 25, CNN reports that the Democratic candidate has 80,026,717 votes, while President Donald Trump of the Republican party is trailing behind on 73,890,300 votes.

Despite his projected loss, this means that Trump has won the second-highest number of popular votes in American history following the record voter turnout for the 2020 election.

In addition, Biden has won 306 electoral votes and Trump has 232, with 270 electoral votes required for a candidate to secure the White House.

A record number of Americans also chose to vote by mail as a result of the ongoing pandemic, which led to experts predicting that the vote count would continue long after Election Day.

News of Biden's record number of votes comes after he and his team were given permission on Tuesday (November 23) to begin the transition into power by the General Services Administration Administrator Emily Murphy.

ABC News reports that Trump tweeted to say that he recommended the move contradicting Murphy's claim that she was never pressured into beginning the transition.

"I believe we will prevail! Nevertheless, in the best interest of our Country, I am recommending that Emily and her team do what needs to be done with regard to initial protocols, and have told my team to do the same," Trump tweeted shortly after GSA released its letter to the Biden team.

However, despite the transfer of power starting, on Tuesday, November 24, Trump tweeted to say that he "will never concede to fake ballots & 'Dominion'".

Now that Biden's victory has been acknowledged by the GSA, his party will have access to more than $7 million in funding and make contact with counterparts with every federal agency prior to the transfer of power in January.

Denis McDonough, President Barack Obama's last Chief of Staff, said that Biden's team can also access classified information now including the Presidential Daily Brief.

He told ABC News ahead of the GSA's announcement Monday afternoon: "It's surely consistent with the spirit and the tradition and the practice of transitions, to make sure that the incoming team is fully briefed on a range of things they're going to confront."
