The man responsible for the mass shooting in Las Vegas has been officially named

One of the suspects responsible for the attack which has so far killed at least 50 people and wounded a further 100, has been named by NBC news as Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old man from Mesquite, Nevada.

The attack happened at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival, which was located across the road from the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Officers at the scene report that a suspect was encountered on the 32nd floor of the hotel with a number of weapons, but was not apprehended alive.

Law enforcement are still looking for another suspect, who they believe to be Marilou Danley, and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department have released a plea for any information about the suspect on Twitter:

"Marilou Danley is being sought for questioning re the investigation into the active shooter incident. If seen please call 9-1-1!"

Danley, who is being described 4 foot 11 Asian female in her 60s, is believed to be the person seen sitting in a car with the suspected shooter before the attack took place.

Police are also on the lookout for two vehicles: a Hyundai Tuscon with the Nevada license plant number 114B40; and a Chrysler Pacifica Touring with the Nevada number 79D401. A public appeal for information on these cars has been put out.

One witness from the scene, Meghan Kearney, recounts what happened in an interview with MSNBC:

"We heard what sounded like firecrackers going off. Then all of a sudden we heard what sounded like a machine gun. People started screaming that they were hit… When we started running out there were probably a couple hundred [people] on the ground.

"People kept dropping and dropping… People were getting shot one foot away from us. People were trying to save their friends. There were gunshots everywhere. Helping them would’ve meant that we got shot too."

Sheriff Joseph Lombardo also disclosed at a press conference that, 'We believe there's a couple off-duty officers that were attending the concert that may have died.'

The motive behind the shooting is not yet known, and police continue to investigate.

UPDATE: Since this article was published, Danley has been located by the police. She is believed to be an Australian citizen.
