New mother took a bullet in the back while shielding her police officer boyfriend during Vegas shooting

As the world begins to recover from the shocking events that took place in Las Vegas yesterday, stories surrounding the bravery and compassion of the people that were caught up in the shooting have began to emerge.

As with all tragedies of this nature, there are plenty of incredible stories being shared on social media about the extreme lengths some people went to in order to protect strangers and loved ones, and this one is simply incredible.

A heroic mother was shot in the back while protecting her boyfriend, who had been shot in the head during the Las Vegas shooting which happened yesterday. Summer and her partner Michael Garcia have a three month old baby girl, and the parents were caught up in the attack at the country music festival which was taking place on the Vegas Strip, leaving 59 dead and 500 injured.

Both of the parents were rushed to hospital, and Summer was treated for a gunshot wound to her back, while Michael who is a police officer from California, was given emergency surgery for the injury he had sustained on his head.

According to reports, Michael is still in a critical condition but he is now stable, following the surgery.

An image uploaded online shows the brave mother walking through hospital carrying her little girl, with a dressing on her back to cover her gunshot wound. It was shared on Facebook by a friend of the family, with the caption: "Shot gun wound and still being the best mom."

She added: "If this isn't the definition of a strong woman then idk what is. Took a bullet to the back by a rifle to save someone else's life and is still going strong for her baby and love of her life.

"Mind you, that bullet is shattered inside of her and unable to be removed.

"Summer, I admire you more than you'll ever know and I am so grateful for you and your love for LeahcimAicarg (Michael).

"I love you guys and will ALWAYS be by your sides."

Friends say that after Michael was shot during the attack, Summer desperately tried to cover his body with her own, resulting in her getting shot in the back. They have now set up a GoFundMe page in order to help raise the funds for their medical bills as well as other expenses.

The page says: "Michael Gracia (Mikey), fellow bearcat from class of 2011, was shot last night at the Vegas shooting, which is the biggest massacre in the United States to date. Michael was shot in the head and was taken to surgery where it was successful but he's going to have a long road of recovery.

"Summer, his girlfriend and mother of his child, covered him while he was hurt, which got her shot as well. The love between those two are real and they are new parents and new parents shouldn't be going through this.

"I want to raise money to help with any medical bills and general bills and necessities so they don't have to worry .

"Please help as much as you can - even a prayer works."

The page has so far received $59,266 in donations since it was set up. It is an incredible act of bravery by Summer, who no doubt saved her partner's life through covering his body with her own.
