A new mother has opened up about her decision to name her newborn twins Corona and Covid to serve as a reminder of the ongoing pandemic, the Mirror reports.

Preeti Verma named her baby boy Covid and her baby girl Corona following their birth at the Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital last Friday.

Verma, from Chhattisgarh, central India, explained per the Mirror that she wanted to be reminded of what was happening in the world in the week of her twins' birth. The 27-year-old does admit, though, that the coronavirus crisis has brought with it some joyful memories - including the birth of her children.

Her children's unusual names are by no means final though as Verma - who also has a two-year-old daughter - confessed to being open to changing their names when they are older.

Verma says, per the Mirror, that there were a number of difficulties in the lead up to her twins' birth. Because of this, she and her husband were determined to make the day a memorable one.

Naming her children Covid and Corona was also motivated by the seriousness of the disease. At the time of writing, there have been 60,874 deaths from COVID-19 worldwide, according to the John Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center.

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this week the country will pull out of the planned three-week lockdown in a phased manner. India has been hardest hit by the disease in South Asia with some 2,902 cases, of which 68 have died. Globally, the virus continues to wreak havoc as the figure of infected people has risen to 1,118,059. The highest number of cases were reported from the US at 277,161 (7,392 deaths) as the global death toll surpassed 59,206. (Photo by Idrees Abbas / SOPA Images/Sipa USA)

Verma stressed the importance of sanitation and hygiene and how the pandemic could help people to cultivate better habits.

Reflecting on rushing to the hospital amid the lockdown, Verna recalled that she and her husband were stopped by the police. However, they let the pair go after noticing her condition.

She also added that friends and family were unable to visit them in the hospital due to the social distancing guidelines.
