Japanese media is reporting that the incident took place at the construction site of a new underground nuclear development in the North East of the country.
According to Japanese television reports, at least 100 people were trapped in tunnels before a failed attempt to rescue them lead to a reported 200 deaths.
It is believed that the incident occured at the weakening ground site of North Korea's nuclear test facility in the wake of a sixth nuclear test earlier this month, though reports are yet to be independently corroborated.
