Robert Downey Jr is returning as Iron Man in new 'Black Widow'

To the joy of mourning Marvel fans around the world, it has been confirmed that we haven’t yet seen the last of Tony Stark and his special suit. Despite clicking his fingers and kicking the bucket at the end of Endgame, Marvel studio executives seem to have confirmed that Robert Downey Jr will reprise his iconic role for a final time in 2020’s “Black Widow”, as per reporting in Deadline.

Watch as Marvel reveal new Thor film:

The film will see Downey Jr return alongside another deceased MCU hero, Scarlett Johanssen’s Black Widow, although the precise nature of his role is currently unknown. Despite haziness over Downey Jr’s involvement, Marvel have confirmed that the film will be a prequel to the Infinity War saga, and will be set in the aftermath of 2016’s Captain American: Civil War.

Production for a Black Widow standalone feature has been in discussion for even longer than the character has been a part of the MCU, going all the way back to 2004. Initially, Marvel approached British actor Emily Blunt for the role, though they eventually opted for Johanssen due to Blunt’s other commitments. She has been a key player in the MCU ever since.

In addition to Downey Jr, it has been confirmed that the cast for the new film will include the likes of Rachel Weisz, David Harbour, Ray Winstone and Florence Pugh, with director Cate Shortland taking the reins behind the camera.

Speaking at San Diego Comic-Con earlier this year, Shortland dropped a few more hints about what fans can expect to see from the movie, specifically addressing why she felt drawn to the character. As she explained it:

"I think that's what drew me to the story, [Black Widow]'s got so many secrets, she's got so much vulnerability and I think that's what makes her such a great heroine. In this film we get to understand her past and put the pieces of herself together and come out a whole person."

Though concrete details about the film remain sketchy, Downey and Johanssen’s returns mean it’s certainly an exciting time to be a Marvel fan.
